Since u are asking specifically abt whether a nett 5 should choose NYJC hybrid or arts stream (instead of pure science stream) for strategic reasons,
Yes, agree. I was referring to students thinking to choose Nyjc with net 5. And if they are double sci, double humanities students, they have the ability to do either. This group chose sci for their choice of uni courses, not limited by abilities, i assume.
I come across one, score well in both sci and arts in high sch level, chose triple arts and maths in jc. Score much better than those sci peers easily. In IP. Yes his interest in towards humanities. But can score well in sciences too.
Although one can rep all, i do think there are such students, hence most in this grp will take hybrid.
Do note the slide posted on page 156 of this thread. It shows those subjects that hit record results (i assume record high, not record low haha). These are all science subjects (except for Translation, which is not a traditional humans/Arts subject actually; and i presume u will need to be a native speaker to score an A in it, or to beat the bell curve). Is this a sign that NYJC Arts teachers are not that good? I don’t know because i have no insider news.
In the real-life case u mentioned (triple arts + math), that student must be dead sure not going to choose a STEM field in uni, since that combi will essentially close such doors on him. -
Yes, he got counselling from many teachers. Motivation is interest, not strategy

And i do believe, many students in sg have interests in arts or humanities but chose sci instead, for practical reasons, regardless whether can score well in sci or not.

I want to point out, doing Art/humanity , does not rule out a career in the Tech sector, where all the higher paying/ in demand jobs are now. Steve Job, Jon Ive (formal Apple cheif designer) and Jack Ma. All of them are not from science backgrounds. Jon Ive is a designer. Jack Ma major in English language. Steve Job, drop out I think. The common thread among 3 of them is , in my own words, understanding consumer psychic . That is rooted in humanity . So why are we thinking only science background can provide a successfully career in high tech sectors?
I attended my child’s JC organised some “future career” talk, by a Uni professor. He pointed out tech sectors are having many new roles previously never heard of. One example is “Chief listening officer”. The job is to listen to consumers feedback. And AI sector now heavy on regulatory discussion. More compliance officers may be needed in future to manage ethical AI application issue.
There will be no lack of people knowing how to do technical stuff. The CS major. But equally important is also having people knowing why consumers are more likely to like a certain product . That is understanding human , and a domain of humanity.
May be doing science is a safer bet, better paying, bigger future job market choice. Humanity/Art role in tech sectors are not so obvious -
The key is to find your ikigai. There is a simplified version called Ikigai for Teens, which DS found very enlightening.

I don't thk the school merely focuses on 3H2 n 1H1. But i dont have ready hard number to share off hand. A number of my DD1's classmates actually takes 4H2. But if they are not doing well in one of their H2 subjects, noticeably Chem, they will be advise to drop the 4th H2 in J2.
There is a record number (in NYJC) of J2 students in the grad class of 2023 admitted for EASE, close to 24% of the corhort (i came across the list 1st hand, so no qualms on the number). These are the ones who have good prelim results (possibly other CT results, not sure ) and good portfolio to be selected for the \"green harvesting\" program for local uni's early admission. So it may be an indication of the no of students taking 4H2 and some even has a H3 subject, on top of their CCA commitment.
True enough. My child does not have fantastic results but is still taking 4 H2, same for his friends, all 4 H2. Therefore, I certainly do not think the school just focus on 3 H2. -
Does anyone have the password to purchase extra uniform / pe online and deliver to house? Can’t seem to find in handbook or anywhere for DS…

Yes, I noticed the other two sciences physics and biology are not reported as record performance. Refer to As?? Or significant improvement?

Only one sci, chem is in the list. Further math and computing are small cohort and likely taken by same group of students.
With Chem, Math and Econs plus Geo/Hist, one can still take med and sci related courses. This combi is allowed at nyjc arts if i gathered correctly. Noted that this combi is under Sci stream at other JCs.
The kid was adamant and knew exactly what he wants. Of course he knows he is not going to take med. Only those who are not choosing sci related courses can consider choosing pure humanities. -

to me personally, Translation is more “humanity” than Geography/Econ. Humanity studies is about human interactions. Geo is human interaction with the physical world; history pass human interaction as society; Lit, interaction on emotion level. To know translation well, I presume must be able to grasps the essence of what the first language speaker trying to say, chose the right words, in order to translate the intent accurately into another language. We all know if we only translate word for word, it may sounds like jokes. Translation training is to bridge human interaction well between different region speakers.

I like the Movie “Arrival”. Long story short, it’s about linguisticians around the world are brought in attempt to communicate with different groups of aliens arrive on earth, by first teaching the alien our human language. In a nutshell , what words are use determine the mood of the communication . And war nearly started because aggressive words are taught to one group of aliens by human from one country and as a result that country and that group of aliens can only sound “aggressive” to each other.
I agree Translation is not “Traditional” in the sense not many people take it. But I see it as close cousin (and easier to score than?) of Literature, very “humanity”
Maybe , Translation students are better listeners too, an important asset in both private and professional life, an important soft skill?
