Just curious, during ccs time, what is the cop of RI back then?
Without many families inflated kids performance with tuition, presumably cop of RI was not as high as now? -

I think parents have to treat each child differently according to their capacities and personalities. One of mine is special needs, easily stressed, low capacity. We set our expectations of how much she did each day accordingly, and obviously had to severely moderate any expectations of good grades.
Do any of your kids experience burn out?
Mine seem to be, and I totally emphathize. I can see they don't plan to carry on at this pace for life. (In a way, semi tang ping?)
They have benefitted richly from the Singapore education experience, but I don't think they like to do it for long.
Maybe all your kids are super high capacity. But as far as I can see, there is a group of Singapore kids who peak early, and cannot sustain at this pace for long. Some want out early, others are less drastic. Yet there are others who are high capacity, high performers in a sustained way.
The other one is completely different - high capacity, eager to take on more, does well. But even for her, we taught her that she couldn't do everything that was offered. We taught her to make time to relax, hang out with friends and family, say 'no' to tempting opportunities, and not compare with those who were doing so much more. Some of them have gone on to do very well, and maybe they won't burn out, but we were watchful of our daughter. FOMO is a real thing for young people when there are so many different opportunities, not like in my day. Parents have to be the voice of reason for such young people. I would tell this girl \"YOLO\" - if she burned out early, she would not be able to live the rest of her one life well. And opportunities, if they were meant for her, would come round again (this is due to our faith) - maybe not in the exact form, but perhaps something even better or more suitable. -

I only know during my time, 250 and above can choose SAP Sch (ie special stream). I presume RI falls into that SAP Sch category? My hubby time when psle score was more than 300, I think above 376 then got chance go RI.

No wonder, makes sense now. Even back then, RI was already sought after and competitive.
RI COP should be 386

RI has always been among the top boys' school - even in my time (1970s!).

But cop at 386 out of 399 is even higher than today's standard. I guess intake is smaller, unlike now at ard 400?

It shows that even back in early 80s, the high parents expectations situation was already taking place. -

Absolutely no idea of the intake. We didn't even have a points system for PSLE in my day - schools were divided into at least 2 tiers (can't remember now), and we were told to choose at most one from the top tier. We never knew how well we did, though I expect those who didn't get into sec school would be told? And if you didn't get either choice, MOE would stick you somewhere, often far, far away. This was in the days when a good no. of kids dropped out of school during Pr school and may not even have stayed to take PSLE.

Oh, interesting! So individual results were not announced back then? So one get posted to a sch with the faith that the posting was by purely merit?

True, drop out rate in the old days should be quite high.
Quite remarkable that someone from the humble background without much assistance from home, can score 386 or better. -
Curious; in western countries, do parents and students also work hard towards top ranking schools? And for those with good enough results, do they also use school rankings, to guide their selection? Are the answers no, and that is why western countries are more relaxing?
Could it also be one of the reason is that in western countries the areas are so big so that before college level, students’ school options are limited to the schools in their town and not every town/county has a RI to drool over for, so ended up for most students only “neighbourhood schools” are available so nothing to stress over for? But then, China is a big country too and well known for 卷 too.
Or it really just an Asian thingy…
