My elder child's experience - nearly none of his friends are keen to study overseas. Several reasons - many of the US and UK universities have or are in the midst of releasing admission results - many were surprised that they didn't receive the offers they had hoped for.

Secondly, many are comfortable staying in local universities, and prefer the flexibility of not taking up a bonded scholarship for overseas studies. Thirdly, studying in Singapore is simply the path of least resistance, as in, least uncomfortable path. Studying overseas always entails some level of missing the comforts and convenience of home.

Hmmm, a bit of a contradiction here. So none of your DS’s friends is keen to study overseas but many had applied to US and UK unis and subsequently found that they got rejected?

So are they keen but got rejected from their dream US/UK Uni so they decided to stay put in Singapore?

I would say a good number of \"top\" school kids cast their nets wide in applying to overseas and local universities, and then decide after seeing what options they eventually have.

The decision where to study, is often due to weighing several factors. Doesn't usually boil down to one single factor.

DS accepted NUS though I would prefer him to go to SMU. Reason for our preference is personality fit - he is more introverted, while I would like him to develop a wider comfort zone.

Studying overseas is stressful too - highly competitive as everybody is aiming for First Class with Recommendation or to be the top student. Majority continued with post-graduate studies.

Last year DD1 wanted to go SMU Biz Ad so I went to find out more. I asked around, surprisingly, people I spoke to raved about SMU Biz Ad over NUS/NTU one. However, a friend pointed out that my DD1 might not enjoy it because she is an introvert. Apparently SMU requires the students to talk a lot a lot and all these “discussions” are graded. Thus all students are out to fight to talk (aka like snatching businesses) I told DD1 about it and she got intimidated by it and started to pounder if SMU Biz Ad really suits her. 不懂是帮了她，还是害了她……

I wanted him to go overseas, if not Western, then other Asian uni, but he is adament about doing it locally so had been working very hard. NUS offer came (too quickly in my opinion), before SMU, though am quite confident of an offer.

Am an introvert, so am aware how stressful it is to have to be sociable / have to talk and possibility of being pass over if not \"able to talk well\", hence would like him to use this opportunity and time to work on his natural biasness and widen his comfort zone.

His concerns are probably same as your daughter. And because of his personality, am also mindful about sending him too far in case the stress plus homesickness tip him over to the wrong path.

I agree.

The most competitive finance or tech jobs (and even some undergraduate scholarships) screen applicants the first round via games based assessments, psychometric tests, some thinking tests - these don't necessarily look out only for intelligence, but certain personality traits and fit as well, and sometimes, tease out certain aspects of thinking. It doesn't matter which university you graduate from, it's more your innate thinking ability, and personality traits.

I also do not agree with relying solely on interviews as a way to determine 'admission' or 'qualification'. As universities and organisations move towards more holistic form of assessments, it will not be as straightforward to pin down what the factors are - it may differ from organisation to organisation.

There are psychometric practice websites - by subscription.

Google has compilation of interview questions by employers and guides on how to put together presentation packs.

Also can consider joining Toastmaster, debating team or be organizer of Ted Talk sessions / events in school.

Some of the interviews are over a couple of days, so will have a fair bit of socializing over tea breaks and meals. Need ensure not to get high.

Also, how to do business without socialising? What kind of business no need to socialise one? Other than the business of being a landlord.
