Am not sure if am reading the info in the CHS website correctly -
https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/politics/7-things-to-know-about-singapore-s-next-prime-minister-lawrence-wong
DMP Lawrence Wong did Economics in the US. His is Bachelor of Science. He subsequently did Master of Arts in applied Economics. Tharman also did Econs (in LSE) and his is also Bachelor of Science. OYK and CCS also did Econs, so it’s quite common to do Econs.
So why an Econs degree in NUS/NTU is a Bachelor Social Science? What is the main difference? Unless one does Econs with Data Science then it becomes B Sc. Does the title of the degree matter?
(i) Econs with Data Science => Bachelor of Social Science,
(ii) Data Science with Econs => Bachelor of Science?
Also not sure if it matters. Or if the GPA matters more.
Plus there are options of single major, double majors (possible for contrasting too), 1 major + 1 minor or 1 major + 2 minors. Will not everybody be trying to do more? -
NTU has a multidisciplinary undergraduate course Renaissance Engineering. Its aim is to produce technology leaders to take on the world. Students will choose an engineering focus (Chemistry, Comp sci. etc) and also learn about business, entrepreneurship and humanities. It’s a 4.5 years course leading to a bachelor in engineering science degree and a master of science in technology management degree

Taking on more, wouldn’t it affect overall, like how kids in sec sch take up 3rd lang, aep, mep, extra sci or hum?
Also it is up to the student studying. If one chooses a uni base on this criteria of flexibility in taking double degree or major but end up the kid only walk the standard path, adv will not be utilised.
Faculty will know how many of cohort each yr will take up double major etc. The one we attended, mentioned more than 80% do single major
I guess faculty will offer the better students first? Not sure if students can request and if regardless of results. -
I would like to know, what is the purpose of doing a double major? Is it to open up more choices of jobs/industries upon graduation?
With the increasing prevalence of cross-disciplinary modules in all our local unis, does that mean that double major is not so necessary any more? Or does double major indicate some prestige/stronger academically factor in a job candidate, versus a single major grad who did some cross-fac modules?
If I were an employer, I don’t think I would care much except for how good the actual knowledge and skills are. -
I suppose if students want to take up double degree there will not be a selection interview , to gauge the suitability? Courses like medicine, courses in SUTD, NTU renaissance engineering, have selection interviews to gauge students’ inclination and are really ready for it.
Imo, double majors is an old arrangement and now can be replaced by inter/multi disciplinary courses (same curriculum time as normal degree)? -
Was taking a look at some of the local uni course descriptions. I actually like how some of them are very flexible in the modules students can choose in the first 1-2 years or so. I find it especially good for this generation who is still very unsure yet what they want to specialize in. And uni style is very different from A levels: no more model answers and assessment books, no more past year papers. The kids have these first few years to explore what they are interested in & are good in, then specialize later.
Heard quite common to switch courses along the way as well, since the early modules have recognized credits. -

Chew Shou Zi also Econs grad
Wah all economists!
In case anyone is misled, an Econs degree is not a guaranteed path to career success. I am an Econs grad and am a nobody

You don't need to 'qualify' for any of the (many, many) open CHS majors offered. Some majors will have prerequisites and if you don't have them, you can read modules to fulfil them. Do read the Reddit threads on CHS - it's very, very flexible.
If I understand correctly, SMU Economics will be a Bachelor of Science, NUS' Economics and Data Science is Bachelor of Social Science. Will be Bachelor of Science if Data Science and Economics.
Also, as CHS is a common platform, may need to compete to get into choice course as opposed to SMU.
Am getting DS to re-assess his decision - seems can withdraw acceptance.
You cannot be admitted to the restricted CHS majors like Pharmacy though.
