My daughter was caught in this position. There were 2 courses she needed to graduate, but she didn't get them in her final semester even though the rubric said that graduating students would be given priority. We appealed and somehow places became available. Otherwise she might have had to graduate a year later.

Perhaps we could look at it from another angle - if your competitive advantage is solely through STEM, how to compete with the STEM graduates from China and India?

I feel that Singaporeans should not think that we are as good as we imagine ourselves to be. Of cos there will be people who will disagree with me.

If not for Govt’s policy that protects Singaporean employment, companies need to employ a certain number of Singaporeans before employing foreigners and the salary threshold of EPs, I would think that a group of Singaporeans cannot command the high salary they are enjoying. PRC Chinese, Indians and Malaysians, many are cheap and good.

I think some places give out bidding points; everyone starts with the same amount. The hot classes / professors go for a lot, and one can bid aggressively for these classes at the expense of less buying power later. In a sense, a market outcome to (scarce) resource allocation.

A friend’s DD in SMU commented that SMU’s bidding system is very stressful. Whatever (modules/lecturers) you fancy, you have to bid for it but if you overuse your credits during all these biddings, you will suffer subsequently from it.

I feel that in a sense, it somehow shaped the SMU Biz students to become very competitive, every opportunity also bid/snatch like 抢生意. And the concept of opportunity cost and market discipline are experienced firsthand.

Actually, I think we do. As Singapore belongs to us, we do expect to be protected as well. But we should be under no illusion that we are much better than the foreigners that come and work for us. We are not, and THEY are able to come to Singapore to work because THEY possess the skills that we do not. If we don't learn from them and better ourselves, our future will be bleak.

If it is an overseas company, and they establish a legal entity and legitimate operations in Singapore, isn't it reasonable to expect them to hire locals?

If their intention is to hire Malaysians, they should be based in Malaysia. If they intend to hire Indians, they should be based in India. Etc. No?

There were precedents of Singapore entities established by Indians and PRCs, with little to no local employment. Intention was for money laundering and financial wizardry, e.g. green wash trades.

I believe that there are rules which limit the no. of foreigners hired, which is based on the no. of locals employed? I don't think it's possible to only hire foreigners now. But I do know that companies complain that some jobs are not popular with Singaporeans, or that Singaporeans want higher pay than companies are willing to pay, hence the hiring of foreigners.

Another thing we need to bear in mind is that work can now be virtual, and Singaporeans will price themselves out of the competition since our cost of living is high, unless we can produce more and better to justify the extra pay. That, I fear, is increasingly going to be one of the challenges of the future. Is it true that once Singaporeans are no longer \"the best\", the world will pass us by and we will sink without a trace? Or can we still survive if we moderate our expectations - be less competitive, and be satisfied with less so we can live within our means? One of the positives may be that our country will be less crowded!

I have recently seen a job ad by a singapore firm, advertising specifically for paralegal to wfh in malaysia. They are paying slightly more than 1/3 of sg salary.


I guess the employer’s thinking is, if the employee wfh in sg, where all instructions and correspondence are via email & whatsapp call, might as well find a wfh staff across the border willing to take 1/3 the pay.

However i dunno how it’s going to work out. I know some sg gov efiling websites are banning non-sg ip addresses because they are deemed to be hackers or non-secure logins. So how would the paralegal/secretary access then? Plus are the malaysian candidates familiar with sg law?
