For the person just doing standard daily work, I guess it is not difficult to learn from seniors whether SG or Msia law? I also think many websites are accessible from outside SG…

I wonder how the quota of how many local to foreigners work if the employee is outside SG?

I have recently seen a job ad by a singapore firm, advertising specifically for paralegal to wfh in malaysia. They are paying slightly more than 1/3 of sg salary.

I guess the employer’s thinking is, if the employee wfh in sg, where all instructions and correspondence are via email & whatsapp call, might as well find a wfh staff across the border willing to take 1/3 the pay.

However i dunno how it’s going to work out. I know some sg gov efiling websites are banning non-sg ip addresses because they are deemed to be hackers or non-secure logins. So how would the paralegal/secretary access then? Plus are the malaysian candidates familiar with sg law?[/quote]
Maybe this paralegal is reporting to someone senior in Singapore who will supervise and review the work or the paralegal is supported by someone junior who can perform the downloading / submission.

Outsourcing overseas can definitely be done, especially if the scale is sufficient to support the relevant HR / tax-related admin.

It's just a matter of familiarisation with the law - the legal principles are not that different. Not sure about the login issues.

Quite a few companies outsource admin/tax/finance/accounting/call centres etc overseas.

If it is an overseas company, and they establish a legal entity and legitimate operations in Singapore, isn't it reasonable to expect them to hire locals?

If their intention is to hire Malaysians, they should be based in Malaysia. If they intend to hire Indians, they should be based in India. Etc. No?

There were precedents of Singapore entities established by Indians and PRCs, with little to no local employment. Intention was for money laundering and financial wizardry, e.g. green wash trades.
Best of both worlds when you have a stable political environment and good infrastructure yet operated by cheap labour.

The big banks based in Singapore, are largely manned by South Asians.

The fact that Woodlands checkpoint is the busiest land checkpoint in the world tells you a lot of things, many Malaysians start queuing to enter Singapore to work here from 5am onwards.

My understanding is that most of the Malaysians are here for jobs that Singaporeans do not want to do, e.g. the ones packing the shelves at Sheng Siong, the ah boy manning the cai png stall, the shop assistants, the factory workers, the hotel staff..

Of course, you also have your Tan Sris and Datuks here to close their big deals ..
Whichever sector has manpower shortage, govt will let Malaysians in first, like those jobs you described above.

Earlier last month, there were a few articles about Malaysia facing “brain drain”, 3 in 4 Malaysians living and working in Singapore are skilled or semi-skilled, with some of them drawing salaries up to S$18K per month.

              https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/malaysia-government-study-brain-drain-working-living-singapore-skilled-salary-4140731

Among the skilled Malaysian workers here are also white collar professionals. There was once I visited a Polyclinic and was surprised that the doctor attending to me was a Malaysian.

I still remember many years ago, during a staff dialogue session, one of my colleagues questioned the management why his boss could have the right to request him to work more than 12 hours a day and 8 continue days, it was violated the present MOM law. The management answered : for those industries which were defined by the Government as \"Essential Service\", they could be exempted from this MOM law, for example, in hospitals, the doctors couldn't say he has completed 44 hours work a week and went home in the middle of an operation. A police could not just went home after completed 12 shift when arresting a criminals. Same for customs, national defence...,etc.

Actually even today, many of my colleagues and DH are on 6 days roaster shift work in order to provide the essential service to people in Singapore. Cannot any how go for 4 days work.

4 days a week. Assuming all in all operation hours/day is Mon-Fri. I send out email today but my colleague is off today so earliest response is the next day and how if next day I m off? Just a simple correspondence/decision/approval need to wait for a longer period ?

It is not just essential workers.

Very often, when I send an enquiry between midnight to 2am for online shopping, I can still receive a response within minutes, and close the transaction (下单)if need. Those retailers that are not able to respond will miss the deal. Am sure am not the only consumer still awake at such hours.

And this concept is not limited to retail.

Going for more flexible working hours may be going towards ‘freelancing’? If I m boss…I will be happy, lesser staff benefits as operation cost.
