My understanding is Chem is not compulsory for A level Sci stream.
Pure Chemistry, is compulsory.
Your son / daughter can take
Either
- Triple Sciences or
- Double Pure Sciences,
depending on how he (she) has fared at end of Sec 2, overall.
Since Chemistry Is compulsory, Double Sciences will mean taking
Either
Chem + Bio
OR
Chem + Physics.
There Is NO (Bio + Physics) combination.
Why ?
Because
Neither Physics nor Bio can stand alone by itself, without the presence of their partner (buddy) Chemistry.
Even in (at) A-level, Chemistry is still compulsory, if u fall under Science stream, in JCs.
But if u are an Arts student at JC (A level), no need to take Chemistry anymore.
Chem is compulsory for express if qualify pure sciences in secondary schools. Correct me if I am wrong.
But I am not sure though, can one take Physics and Biology with Math in A level?
There is biomedical science or engineering in poly. -
My understanding is that all secondary schools insist on chemistry (either pure or combined) being in their upper sec combinations, for the reason of opening up the most number of post-secondary options (or not closing off those options too early).
However, there is no MOE ruling that says a candidate MUST sit for the Chem papers during O levels. Chem is not a prerequisite for several jc and poly courses, although it is certainly a prerequisite for many of the popular ones.
Similarly, A level chem is not a prerequisite for several uni courses, although it is for the more popular ones. Hence i believe very few jcs are willing to offer Science stream combis that exclude chem. -
Chem being pre requisite for many uni courses, is this only applicable in SG? How abt overseas uni?
-
For visual learners, likely physics and biology are more suitable and compatible combination. Both are about how something or system works.

Sorry no idea. My child is planning for Arts courses not Science.

Isn’t upper sec Chemistry also very visual? Dot and cross diagram, molecular bonding, enthalpy graphs, redox reactions?

Cannot recall, all returned... Hahaha... I only know i hated Chem, so i cannot appreciate why my child likes it so much. Told her i cannot help if she needs.

Well no issue then. And chem tuition is common and easy to find. Unlike Lit for example, dun even have TYS.

Chem to me is not useful unless one is looking at lab work. Most of us do not need to know so much in details. Those i know who major in chem, so far, didn't go into lab work eventually.

Bio is useful, even so in child caring. Physics is all around us in physical world. -

Chem principles are actually more useful than bio if aiming for science-related career.

Bio tbh is easily picked up becos the content is just factual. Anyone with interest will be motivated enough to remember the necessary info, even if starting late at uni level.
