Hi Mother777, would you share which uk medical schools your daughter has applied to? My gal is not successful for local schools but receives offer from the uk. not sure about letting her go all by herself. Still hope to reapply as the uk costs are really high. but your post on uk uni encourages us. Thank you!
Lucid, I do honestly pray the situation has improved.
With regards to your statement of friends sending their children to Uk / AUS, the teaching style in Australia is way different than SG. Teachers / professors are more open and receptive to feedback. They encourage children so much. But sometimes too much friendliness backfires - as they cheeky kids can take advantage and misbehave in class.
I have seen the colleges in Australia (Monash, Deakin etc. are like 15 mins from my home). And I visited UK med school as DD had to go for face-to-face interview, the college vibe is entirely different. Everyone from students walking in campus, the cafe, library, admin team is very supportive and full of support. The office admin lady in fact stopped what she was doing and took me on a quick tour of the campus facility when she heard I came all the way from Australia. It's so vibrant and there is so much acceptance on students from different backgrounds. No wonder many prospective students go to UK or AUS if the parents can afford.
But for this to occur in SG, it's not just the faculty - rather the whole society has to change. Us Singaporeans do get caught in our day-to-day life and try to be brisk & efficient in everything we do. Sometimes, this leads us to be just too direct and serious. Now when I return, I see lot less smiles when I walk on SG roads vs what I see in UK/AUS.
May be now when I visited SG and went for a quick walk on the road or just in the lift, people may have thought - \"Who is this mad woman and why is she smiling at me and saying Hello when I don't know her? LOL
Well, I am biased, and I love my SG in all its shades.
It is indeed hard to use someone else's references to gauge. Hope parents and candidates are doing their own due diligence. Definitely go and see the university for own self and talk to existing cohort.
I honestly have not done any research into Dentistry into NUS. But to even imagine the possibility of students being left to fend for themselves to get patients to practice on or for assessment is appalling. Hope this situation has gone. :xedfingers: -
For UK, the lowest overall cost appears to be Cardiff. One of the UK unis that my daughter was interviewed for. Cost of living and tuition fees are definitely lower compared to the other unis which are recognised by SMC

Good Day!
Hi Mother777, would you share which uk medical schools your daughter has applied to? My gal is not successful for local schools but receives offer from the uk. not sure about letting her go all by herself. Still hope to reapply as the uk costs are really high. but your post on uk uni encourages us. Thank you!
I will PM you with details of the medical school my daughter interviewed for.
So, if I understand correctly, your daughter already has an offer from UK med school? and it is recognized by SMC?
As far as I have heard, all UK med universities are GMC recognized and their course curriculum is standardized to meet the GMC requirement. But for Singaporeans who want to come back to practice, the choices are limited to UK universities recognized by SMC.
I live overseas, so my DD was not restricted by only going to SMC recognized colleges. The UK med school she got offer was recognized in the overseas country we live in.
UK has a large presence of Asians and the university I visited (2.5hrs train ride from London) had a very diverse cohort.
So, fear not, if your DD gets UK interview and offer thereafter - I suggest you give it a serious consideration. Please do consider the financial obligations are lot heftier than SG med school. We definitely would have had to take loans to fund her course fee and living expenses - but this was secondary to the passion our DD had to study medicine.
To me - it was like making a choice between - saving money now and give children an inheritance OR give them a career now so that they can earn their own by working in domain they love? The choice was clearly the later one.
I had actually paid the initial deposit bond to reserve the seat for my DD as she got UK offer before SG one. I do not regret losing the bond as it was our back-up plan. Going to UK, attending their interview and securing the offer was a morale booster for my DD. She came back so confident to attend the SG interviews.
I wish you and your DD - the best!! -
I would advise to consider the overseas option with good due diligence, especially if the child wants to practise here. Just few years ago, SMC culled 60 schools from the list to bring it down to 100. The good news is they also cull to foreward date the point of expected graduation year so no one already an undergrad is caught out.

It is also harder to obtain housemanship or residency placements and can you imagine if you are a graduate from school already culled from the list? I recently met a young doctor from one of the UK med schools which was removed from the list. He said it he was the last “approved” batch, now out as GP. Was told that many turn to aesthetics as it’s the only area that these foreign trained docs can quickly make return on investment given the high outlay from parents and their limited pathways. Money good but what of “passion” to be doctor … still stuck as cog to serve rich tai tais. Seriously, I’d rather my child take CS for the money then if any concern or mindset to get return on investment. SG standard of living is harsh so even the wealthiest of families know that.
My friends who are heading departments actually feedback that while it depends on individual, generally they monitor the tier 2 schools and even Oxbridge addenbrooks (generally more academically focused) don’t give them the clinical rigour or pace to prepare for SG clinical environments. Some period of adjustment is needed and the consultants hv to sign on that they vouch for this foreign trained houseman so few want to do so.
If practising here, then be prepared to do more time as houseman unlike the 1 yr for the local YLL/LKC/DukeNus guys who are already familiar with the SG system. There was a poignant post forwarded to me that employment and deployment of junior doctors are done by MOH Holdings etc some voiced greivances that they feel ( whether valid or not) they were unfairly kept on longer periods before licensing given they had no bond to serve. So talk to overseas returnees and verify their experiences. We also had friends with returning kids who could not find placements in SG hosps as now, SG turns out 500 per year. Around 200 will return to in varying capacities every year coupled with cheap imports from third world country for polyclinics.
My advice is if you do med overseas, to stay away until you obtain the specialist license. Lifestyle in AU is better too. UK is debatable unless you can survive the bankrupt NHS ( extended family were NHS doctors, said no no no please). -
