My child has been weak in CL since pri sch but still managed to pass. Now in sec 1, his school give an option to those who are weak in CL to take CLB. I find it hard to make decision whether to let him take because i’m afraid he might not be able to enter Uni from poly.
From what i know, once the students switched to CLB, they are not able to switch back to normal chinese. When they enter JC, they still need to continue with CLB. What about poly? Is CLB available in poly too? I never heard of that before.
To enter Uni, the student need to have a pass in CLB from JC. Does it means if poly don’t have CLB then my child won’t be able to enter Uni from poly? -
It’s best if you ask MOE or the universities directly for this info.

华文B 不会影响孩子进入大学的机会。My child has been weak in CL since pri sch but still managed to pass. Now in sec 1, his school give an option to those who are weak in CL to take CLB. I find it hard to make decision whether to let him take because i'm afraid he might not be able to enter Uni from poly.

华文B 的坏处是没有计分, 不可当R5的其中一科使用。
如果孩子华文真的不行, 也只好拿华文B了。虽然我对华文B非常反感 -

You don't have to do Mother Tongue Language (MTL) in Poly. Hence you can still go Uni from poly without MTL.My child has been weak in CL since pri sch but still managed to pass. However do note that CLB grade cannot be used in L1R5 / L1R4 / ELR2B2 computation.
Few years back, my nephew was promoted from Sec 1 NT to Sec 2 NA. There is a jump in the CL level between NT and NA, hence the school asked him to do CLB. After a few lessons, he decided to switch back to NA CL as he found CLB is a waste of time - too easy for him !!
Hence I suggest you talk to the school and ask whether your child can switch later when the results show that he really cannot cope with the main stream CL.
Although it is still early (since your child is only in Sec 1), you can read up 2014 JAE Information Booklet to understand the entry requirement for JC/MI/Poly/ITE. Check out this website >> http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/jae/ -
It’s unfortunate that my child’s new chinese tutor didn’t work out quite right for us. Looking for one, either home tutor or learning centre, for Sec 2 Higher Chinese.
If mummies have any recommendation, appreciate if you could let me know.
Thanks.
