U are incorrect, both RGS and NYGH are pure IP school, no o level track in sec 1 and sec 2. In NYGH, weaker students (about 20 each year) are structured into SIP class (o level, detached from IP prog) based on their promotion result in sec 2. By taking out weaker students ensures all girls can go proceed sec 4 to HCI In RGS, basically a pass will see u through to JC. Those failed ones will be retained and re-do again.

I have already replied that I have not mentioned NYGH labelled as a dual-track school by definition.
Any parent exploring the two schools would have known that they are looking at IP schools.

common exam held only at the end of Year 4, for which subjects in particular?

Is it for ALL Year 4 subjects

Or

only for one or two subjects ?

If is merely one or two subjects, then u CANNOT say that it is a common exam.

Can identify,
which are the Year 4 subjects, that are NOT common ?

Not common exam for EL, HCL (not sure about other MT), Maths, Sciences, ...

I think it is fine either way (common exam or not).

Nygh and Hci only has one common exam for Y4 EOY IM2 only. I feel it’s pitched at a lower level than say the usual nygh IM2 papers.

Hello, have read through this thread and hoping for some input.

I believe both are good schools and I’m trying to help my DD find the right fit for her. She is from a SAP primary school . She does not dislike chinese but it is her worst subject despite putting more effort into it, as compared to maths and science that she copes with easier.

She is not the outspoken and extroverted sort, but does not have a problem presenting or speaking in front of crowds. I like that RGS does philosophy at lower sec and seems to empower the girls more. What about the girls in NYGH?

Would be grateful for any input !

Hi not sure how valid it is now given my 3 girls are in HCI or uni now.
They were all from NYGH and graduated from SAP pri Sch as well. Their Chinese is not great (pri sch supplemented with tuition but A*/distinction at PSLE) and no tuition from sec onwards. Eventually distinction at O level HCL. If your concern is about their Chinese standard, I don’t think you need to worry. 70% or so obtain distinction at O HCL, the rest probably B3 which is good enough to be exempted from H1 Chinese in HCI.
Based on your description your gal seems to NYGH culturally however I do know of some parents who prefer to place their daughters into RGS to push them out of their comfort zone. No rights or wrongs both are great schools. Best is to bring your gal to both open houses and feel the atmosphere. My gals immediately said no to RGS after the OH as they find the environment too ‘rowdy’ while I preferred RGS.

I’m more worried my DD cannot keep up with the chinese standard at NYGH , will the school provide additional support for girls weaker in Chinese?

We’ve been to both open houses, and my DD doesn’t really have a preference. Personally , I prefer RGS due to the diversity and my feel is that the girls have more autonomy?

Hi I have children in both RI college and HCI college, via JAE. I would assumed the cultures from these 2 colleagues would somewhat a continuations from their respective high schools (RGS/NYGH). I attended these 2 schools’ open houses and school events and I do find their have very distinct culture differences. Most importantly it’s a matter of good fit for the child. In summary, I find RI is more formal and high profile whereas HCI is less formal and lower profile.

• I have children in concert band cca in both colleges. RI would book Victoria concert hall for their annual concert performance. The students are all dress up in suits for their performance and we have to pay for the concert ticket. HCI annual performance is held in the school auditorium and it’s free. Students would wear black shirt/ bottom. RI performances give that international vibes whereas HCI perform some of the Xinyao pieces which touched my heart.

• RI engage external event organiser to organise an ideal sharing talk with domain experts. The whole event felt like a fashion show and with all the impressive staging and lighting. HCI events are usually held at its auditorium with no bells and whistles.

• RI open house are well coordinated, with students guides stationed at gateway to welcome visitors with guided tours. HCI open house is spontenous- students doing their own stuffs , campus feels lively and spontaneous. Visitors got to move around on the own.

• RI campus is quite closely spaced and feel like a ministry building . HCI campus is widely spaced and fell open.

• academic wise, my HCI child commented RI’s practice papers are easy. And I have the impression HCI stretches their students more than RI’s.

If your gal doesn’t have a preference and willing to listen to you, then maybe you can assess based on what or how you think you want her to grow up to be.
In terms of Chinese or other acad support, I believe NYGH has pull-out classes to assist the weaker students. The fact that my girls do not need tuition, do not like Chinese or use Chinese, can still obtain distinction, speaks a lot about the teaching/preparation in the school.
They are two vastly different schools with different beliefs and cultures. The Raffles schools have produced a lot of leaders and influential figures. HCI probs less so maybe they are of lesser profiles also because of the culture to be humble and uphold more traditional values. I would have preferred my gals to go RGS for various reasons but ultimately they are the ones who have to go through the arduous 6 years journey.

Hi, Hi, actually my DS is in RI (IP) so I guess I roughly know what Raffles is like . However I do think there’s some difference between girls and boys and was wondering about the culture in NYGH.
My DS didn’t really have a preference for either HCI or RI then, and he chose RI in the end due to the MEP programme and so far he seems to be coping quite well.
May I ask what is the difference between the personality of your children in HCI and RI? What prompted each of them to choose their respective college? Thank you!

Good question. Their choices reflected their inclinations.

The child that chose RI, because he found RI was well organised during the JAE open house. He is the type that prefer well defined rules and orders. The child that chose HCI is more “lackback”- prefers to “follows his heart”.
