All About Measuring Home-School Distance
-
Hi ReganMummy,
I totally agree with verykiasu2010 about some condos.
My son’s classmate from kindy stays in Southhaven. It doesn’t mean that the whole estate of Southhaven is within 1km. The block that his classmate stays in is OUT of 1km. So had to go for balloting for Pei Hwa. -

There seems to be some changes to how info is provided. A new map search tool is available at http://www.onemap.sg/index.html. Look for SchoolQuery (2nd round button from the left, at the top). You can choose to find buildings near school, or schools near building.
Hope that helps -
I believe all schools have a map of the distances of nearby houses from their schools. Easiest way is to call them up to check.

there are certain condos which seemingly is within 1km .... but the devil is in the details ....some blocks are within, some are not ......check with the school which block is in ..
Please read the caveat on the onemap.sg website when u want to measure the distance from the school :
\"The measurement result is indicative only. It should not be used as an accurate measurement for official purpose, eg the distance between school and building for Primary One Registration.\"
Hey am new here. Just saw what you guys talked about. I went to try out \"schoolquery\" on the http://www.onemap.sg, and you know what, if you click a building and see what're the schools around your address, and click the print icon, it gives you a listing; the listing kind of looks like the one in http://www.inlis.gov.sg last time that we have to buy. So it is free now with onemap. Not bad lah! The listing looks official, so I think onemap can be trusted lah, after all this one comes from the government wor... not like other websites which are commercialised...
Ya, verykiasu, I saw the caveat also. I think this one applies only if you use the map measuring tool to DIY. They are trying to tell us that don't DIY and come claim that your house is within 1km or 2km ok? better use the Schoolquery. maybe someone email onemap and ask them? -

I read one of the threads that says the parent needs to travel > 10km to bring the kid to school and some parents are advising her to chose a more nearby school as P3 onwards , the kid will have more activity and its a pain to let them travel so far . I am thinking of enrolling my kid in RGPS which is at Bukit Timah and I am staying in Jurong , I use the streetdirectory to measure , it is about 14 km to drive there and takes 20 mins . Is this considered far ?? I am afraid morning jams could be a killer next time and will take more than 20mins . Should I reconsider other options ? Could someone advise ?? THanks a mil !

if you have a car and don’t mind driving your DD to & from school, then why not?
Jam is a concern but should be minor as most schools start very early.
It will take more than 20min as you need to factor in the JAM at & around the school. -

\"notsokiasudaddy\" is correct, the caveat applies only if you use the digital measurement tool.
If you key in any school name and use the \"Find Buildings near a school\" you will notice that homes within 1 km are in RED, and homes between 1km to 2km are in BLUE.
If you select \"Find Schools near a building\", click an any selected home on the map, schools within 1 km will be coloured RED, and schools between 1km to 2km will be in BLUE.
Basically, SLA's OneMap is official. Depending on the individual primary school, they themselves may not know with full accuracy.
Generally, if your school or home of interest is well within the borders, you're safe. But if you're near the borders, better to use inlis.gov.sg and pay for a downloaded report on that school/home.
Do note that not all blocks within a condominium will necessarily fall within the catchment of a particular school. One must check.
I've interacted with SLA before although not directly for schools registration yet... but my time will come soon!
Knowing every parent's needs, we created http://www.whereto.sg last year, also using SLA source data. In addition to primary schools, we put child care and kindergartens up for map-based searching too... -
Hi carsndora,
do we start the search based on our address point or can we search from our desired school?
