SMU campus is tiny at 4.5 hectares. Compare to NTU’s 200 and NUS’ 150.

Last weekend SMU’s open house I attended sample classes. Seminar style classroom. One of them seatings in U shape layout. Students are facing each other. I felt awkward in the beginning. SMU is known for students’ presentations . Apart from class participations requirements, I think their class seatings layout of students facing each other is helping them become better presenters. 4 years of that they will be more comfortable facing audiences next time.

Their Integrative Studies degree left me a deep impression too. Students get to design their own curriculum and thus name of their degrees, after faculty members/industry mentors approved its feasibility/practicality. They will be taught inter disciplines thinking. The professor said if students’ curriculum requires any module not offered in Spore, they will send the students overseas to places that offer that module. But this Integrative Studies degree programme is more suited to adventurous students. The professor agrees.

@bbbay Did you get to meet the Dean of the School of Integrative Studies? He speaks really well I won’t have the guts to pursue such a path though. But then again I belong the older generation - am not Gen Z.

@Imp75 Yes I think so! My older one was a Science kid, younger one was an Arts kid. Science kids have a far wider range of uni courses to consider and choose from. Similar to the older one, my 2nd kid is also applying to SMU and NUS. All kids seem very drawn to SMU!

How about your kids?

How about your kids?

My younger girl ruled out SMU as she didn’t like the “style”. Influenced by her parents? She enjoyed the traditional UK course structure.

I recall you said your younger one chose an unconventional degree study in UK. Could you share what study was that ?

now that you mentioned it - both my kids are drawn to the SMU campus, the vibe, the seminar style teaching and the mock classes they attended. However, they didn’t really like the idea of group work - SMU seems to have a lot of group work. That said, I think group work is a common feature in most of our local uni curriculum - can’t run from it if studying in local unis.
