Does Smu have guaranteed overseas experience?
My other main concern is smaller cohort + no boarding may equate to lesser opportunities to make friends.
I thought I read somewhere that smu has lesser hrs of lessons compared to the other 2 unis, so their students typically do side projects with that extra time. Looks like need to be very driven (I read on average smu kids have more internships too). I would have want my son to enjoy his youth more leh, or should join the rat race early?

@jedamum I believe overseas experience is a compulsory graduation requirement, only at SMU.

oh yes, NUS has a comprehensive range of residential experience to suit different interests. There are Residential Colleges and Halls. The Residential Colleges programmes appeal to many students. I’m not sure if NTU Halls have similar programming.

My kids have however decided they’d prefer to stay at home if they are studying in Singapore lol

From the interview video on NTU students, it seems to me NTU students are more relax is some aspects of the Uni life. Their campus is at “country side”, somehow the pace will be slower than SMU’s city campus. Big enough campus ground with may halls. Hall life should be big part of NTU experience. I think NTU students are more likely in slippers and shorts. More unlikely for SMU’s students to dress like that when in city central.

Have any of your kids expressed a strong desire to study overseas for university because they have already experienced 12 years of a Singapore school system and that local university is likely to be an extension of the academic and schooling culture of school days?

I recall you said your younger one chose an unconventional degree study in UK. Could you share what study was that ?

Not at all! Totally conventional - Economics! She wasn’t even unconventional in her choice of work - she is working in the public sector which involves industries. Unconventional only in that she didn’t want a financial sector job.

Her activities, internships and vacation jobs were more unconventional - she did some prison/ex-offender work, sang in a choir, helped prepare meals for homes (during Covid), was going to do some volunteer work in Taiwan (but it didn’t happen because of Covid), sold CNY snacks (after A levels). She also did 2 very short internships in commercial/financial institutions, and a longer one in a consultancy firm.

Local education system is one of best in the world. If another overseas U has a system that can improve the child more than local system, it may be worth going overseas. Else, going overseas solely for trying out another system, even with a scholarships, personally I don’t think it is wise.
