Have any of your kids expressed a strong desire to study overseas for university because they have already experienced 12 years of a Singapore school system and that local university is likely to be an extension of the academic and schooling culture of school days?

Local education system is one of best in the world. If another overseas U has a system that can improve the child more than local system, it may be worth going overseas. Else, going overseas solely for trying out another system, even with a scholarships, personally I don’t think it is wise.

That seems to be the prevalent view now among parents and this generation of JC kids. There is a certain amount of risk taking with trying out a new system - that in itself is a learning opportunity and gives a person two vantage points to learn, compare and contextualize. However, I agree that the local option is ‘too good to give up’ in many instances.

We are an example where we will be giving up an early admission local offer to study in an overseas university which is def lower in regard than the local ones.
We tried to be pragmatic but I guess eventually we should let the child fly/bask in their passion. Whether it is a career enhancing or ending move, nobody knows but at least the child has an experience they sought after.

          Have your kids decided?

My kid has not gotten an local university offer yet - still in the midst of applications. But in all likelihood, we’ll be in a similar boat because I can sense the inclination to study overseas.

            Understand.

In my case, If my child tells me he knows and likes the way of life, say in a small university town somewhere in Iceland , where business close early but out of the world landscapes are all around. He enjoys and will study Geography in the Uni which is low in world ranking, but get to do cross country field research in 4 wheel drive truck. Forgoing the opportunity to study in NUS and risking other opportunity costs. I may support child’s decision. If it’s out of curiosity my child wants to experience how studying in Iceland is like, I would ask my child to give me another 2 reasons.

Practical question. For child who’s going to study overseas, do u still keep their local mobile number so they can stay contactable with their SG friends? Right now the plan they subscribe to is quite high cost with unlimited data. Any idea if we switch provider to those simba or low cost carrier, can we still number port with low or minimal fee?
Also do you pack light for the child and get the child to buy all necessities locally or send boxes over? My child is leaving end mar so getting a bit anxious

@Imp75 You should be able to port the number for free or minimal cost to some $10 plan (or whatever it is these days). However, won’t the child need a foreign number to keep in touch with people here (WhatsApp and whatnot)? The SG based number would need roaming abroad, might as well get a foreign number and transfer any accounts to that number (other than things like Singpass).

I would only pack what fits in the luggage allowance. Just buy whatever is needed there.

                Many congrats and good luck.

I think iPhone 10 onwards support dual sim. One physical sim and 1 (maybe more) eSIM. Whenever I go overseas now I will purchase and setup eSIM on my phone. This way I can still receive SMS on my spore number via physical sim and also uses the eSIM data plan.

                      Congrats on your daughter’s decision.

We kept the local number for admin (eg banking) purpose. DD also maintained her overseas number for same reason. There is quite a fair bit of communication and services tied to phone number nowadays, do not want any slippage or omission due to phone number being cancelled.

DD went alone so we only packed the essentials within baggage allowance. We did try sending Prima paste but seems paste/liquid is not allowed. Not sure about courier though.

I believe the local number needs to be kept, in order to receive SMS 2FA, eg in the scenarios when doing internet banking eg transfer money/check the balance in sg bank account, or even certain local credit cards transactions/login. The overseas roaming will have to be switched on manually prior to these transactions. Whether or not you use a spare phone, or dual-sim method, is up to u.

Whatsapp accounts will be retained since they are tied to the physical phone (or profile login) rather than the phone number, i believe. Although sometimes there are missed messages during the transition.
