NUS Open House on Sat! Anyone going?
-
I will be going to NUS open house this Saturday. I was at NTU open house last weekend too. I quite like NTU campus for its lots of open spaces actually. Their halls types range from modern apartment like, I saw one block that has that modern Scandinavia vibe. I also like those old low rise blocks. Reminds me of Tiong Bahru. Very cute. Campus cut off from rest of spore may be a good thing. Can focus on studies and enjoy hall life

Hahahaha u forgot about the potential noise pollution from the construction of the JRL or the army exercises and the invasion of the monkeys at the halls nearest to the forested areas.
(No offense intended, I am an NTU alumni).
What I do not really like is that NTU do not have dedicated halls like the RCs in NUS where students stay and participate in enriching activities rather than the general hall activities. Some said the scholars are grouped together in certain halls but I am not sure if it’s true cos I was told hall allocations are random. -
At NTU Open house a scholar was promoting his scholarship to me. He said all scholars of that programme are guaranteed 4 yrs hall stay . But no mentioning of whether all scholars are staying in same hall or not. General students are guaranteed only first 2 yrs.
Another student told me, students can decide on room type but university will decide which hall to allocate to the student

I’m slightly confused with the local university scholarships.
Looks like there are different tiers? So the top tier scholarships will cover tuition fees, allowance, hall stays, exchange programmes etc - I guess the most comprehensive? And then the subsequent tiers cover fewer items?
Do you automatically get considered for the top tier ones, then next tier if you don’t get the top tier scholarship?

An NTU scholar told me during the open house, can just select all the scholarships and then see which one get thru. I think what he meant was to select a few that interest the students and then see how things turn out; cast the net wider.
From what I see, each scholarship has different requirements and each offer slightly different benefits. But most of them i believe offer full tuition fee coverage. Some scholarships are AI centric. Applicants must demonstrate strength/passion for AI during interviews. Others scholarships looks for strong leadership. So i think students must explicitly apply for each scholarship. On SMU booklet it offers tips on how to secure scholarship. One of the tips is research on that scholarship, what type of candidate they looking for, and then demonstrate that you for the bill. So there are some form of matching between scholarship and students.
Other parent pls feel free to correct my understanding

I would also like to know. Saw from this forum last time 90RP straight away give scholarship (NUS/NTU) with no portfolio/leadership. Don’t even need interview. I wonder is this still the case now? SMU all along needs interview for the awardment of scholarship so nothing change.
For my gal at NTU, went interview (by primary major school she chose) in mid jan and awarded late Jan before A results. After results, was awarded another once-off monetary award. -
the landscape and options now are so many I think its hard to keep up. Will leave it to the kids to explore and discover, and I wait to be informed of the outcomes and decisions. lol

All I know is that my kids want to live at home and are not / did not explore halls or residential colleges or whatever.

For NUS, I thk what it means is that the candidate is most probably being interviewed at other juncture during her uni application, not necessarily for the NUS scholarship she applied for. The panel will refer to those other historical details (earlier interviews) already in their system before he or she is deemed suitable n therefore award him or her for a scholarship, such as NUS Globsl Merit or Merit scholarship. My elder dd scored 90rp last year, has some decent but not too spectacular portfolio. She was interviewed for her NUS college application n Law application. She applied both Global merit n Merit scholarship and was awarded NUS merit scholarship without further interview…
On the other hand, her friend at NTU has 88.75rp,
minimal potfolio. She did not apply for any scholarship in NTU but they approached her directly for USP - Uni Scholar Programme interview and awarded her with USP scholarship.I understand also that these uni scholarships may not be awarded just for thoss 90rp, etc…it all deps on what course they hv applied for as 1st choice. Eg if he or she is applying for med, law or den, where there are just too many 90rp-ers, then it’s not easy to land one, notwithstanding their portfolio.
Similarly, my dd’s hostel mate at NUSC has 88.75rp but she has been awarded Global Merit scholarship. It all has all to do with your 1st choice in your application.
Hope this helps.

Does it mean putting as 1st course with a UAS that is way above the rest of the applicants’ UAS in that same 1st choice course, will increase the chance of landing a scholarship?
