In some ways, I do agree with you. I prefer to read newspaper in print rather than online.

On the other hand, I see online learning taking place even at workplace. Some systems do allow you to monitor and track your child performance remotely.

These days children multi-task, they are on MSN, friendster while researching on their work. Some MOE schools are using online testing for non-core subject like health-edu… I believe that in near future, online test will be a reality.

Yes, definitely. This is one big draw back of online learning. Also, it is not too good for the kid’s eye sight. I am never a big fan of online learning because whatever you can do online, you can do it on book. Online learning can attract young kid becasue of the colorful graphics but in real life, school test is still not conducted online. Another reason for kids to "pretend’ that they like online learning is because they might get a chance to play online game after they have completed the online learning, sometimes even while they are doing the online assessment. Play game and do online assessment at the same time - happy hour loh![/quote]

are there studies to prove that e-learning is that great. I know our schools are using. I know all kids love computers so it must be clever to merge what kids like to do (use computers) and what they do not like (do homework!)

has anyone been in the portal? is the content good?

I think primary children are too young to be multi-task. I do not understand how can a kid doing maths online assigment and MSN / play game / skype at the same time? They need to learn to concentrate at this age.

I have seen my friends children discuss maths problem over MSN, pretty interesting. I agree that they need to concentrate, they should leverage on technology to enable them to acquire knowledge.

I have a friend who is in online learning (for P1 to P6) business. He told me that there are some parents discontinue the subscription after a few months because it is too time consuming and the result is not very good. The kids like to play game or surf net while doing the online assessment - unless the parents are standing behind them. Using MSN to chat with freind about homework is good BUT slow - children typing can be very slow. Anyway, different kids have different way of learning. If online learning works for your kids, then just let them continues to do online learning.

Hello, I receive a mailer from Popular, they have recently launch a online assessment portal with system to let you know your child weakness.

Has anyone tried before? think they have some national day promo.

I am still thinking if i should just buy normal assessment books.

I would first try an online portal, especially if there is a promotion available now — that way, you can at least see your child’s weaknesses without buying a bunch of books. If you like it and find it useful, you can then buy regular assessment books for practice. Personally, that’s what I would do.
