All About Full-Time Maids

We actually spoke to her several times over a year but we got to a point where we cannot agree becos she felt that it is a right rather than a privilege to chit chat while working & I am unable to allow this becos of my situation at home. Its a big decision for me as we are already so comfortable with the routine and the kids liked her very much. I think she is also tired of a maid's life...& this HP thingy is too much of a distraction...she is the hardworking type and not the playful type (on some of her off days, she joined some sports events-& she is a leader of one group)and she has a house to pay for...I wonder what is she going to do when she goes back.....
Hi Breadandmuffins,
Is it a new issue, this heavy usage of handphone? Just curious because since she already worked so long ie. 7 years without any problems, why is it a problem now? I just thought it is a waste since all of you and kids like her. Of course nobody is indispensable but also not easy to get replacement. If she herself wants to go off, then it is of course best to let her go.

Hi Petmama,Hi, I'm new to this forum.
Just a word of caution. When you send your maid to any agency for boarding (while you are away on vacation), it will be best to get them to sign a letter of assurance that your maid will not be sent to work in other household.
Some agencies do part-time housekeeping and your maid may be asked to tag along. And while tagging along, she can't be doing nothing. So she'll help out. Now, if she accidentally fall off the building while hanging clothes, then YOU as the employer will be held responsible. You MAY be charged for illegal deployment, and that (part-time) household MAY be charged for illegal employment.
In other words... trouble!
I have told my maid not to do any part-time work during her off-days.
Good point, never thought or knew of that! Isn't it unfair to send the maid to do part-time work? If that is the case, I will rather she go stay with some relatives!

When I first moved to my current neighourhood abt a year ago which has many expats, I went to a nearby playground one evening and that is it. I never go back there.....cos its full of these maids (easily more than 10) singing, laughing chitchatting so loudly while the expat kids or the dogs run/wonder aroundit is my observation that Indo maids are better
seeing those Fillipinas around my neighbourhood ...... can't imagine what they are up to when the Sir and Madam are not in
. near my place, there is this maid always walking the dog (several times a day) and lingering (eg: let the dog play opposite the workers) /talking to the workers at the construction sites nearby.

you made the right decision. as i mentioned i just sent my previous maid back due to the hand phone issue. she also felt it was her right to use hand phone. but i never regret sending her back.
sometimes i feel these maids are not rational at all. they need to experience and suffer to understand the goal of life. now after staying in agent home and suffering (she lost lots of weight there) for almost one month and knowing her mother could not work anymore due to illness, my previous maid finally found a new employer who even does not allow hand phone from day one. now she is telling me that she actually could choose to work for me even without hand phone. this is not what she said before. at the time when i sent her back, she would never give up her phone, even after i promised her to buy her a ipod, increase salary, watch tv, free usage of home phone, plus a new laptop computer to exchange her hand phone.
for your maid, i think after she goes back and calms down for a while, she may regret and ask you if she can come back. they seriously need a lesson to grow up and be mature. you just wait and see.Breadandmuffins:

if working for 7 years probably she has made enough money for her already. maybe she feels she is rich and it's time to play then just use this chance to go back.

Quite new cos I think she joined some social/sports group abt the same time that we noticed her using the phone late at nite(sometimes close to midnite). That was 1 year ago . First 6yrs, maybe not so many friends yet. We spoke to her and asked her if she got problems at home & she said something like cousin got problem (on hindsight, I think its not true cos during the next two sessions with her she said her late calls are only chit chat). At that time, I also did not know if she used a lot during the day. Stopped for a few wks and then she started to talk till late again. ALso start to be impatient with my kids. My MIL who visits once a wk also ask me why she looked so tired. But as she was abt to go home leave, we thought ok, let it be maybe got many things to arrange. After come back from home leave, started to talk late again and that’s when I decided to chk her phone. (I never touched her things for 6yrs). Surprised…several calls or sms in/out thru’out the day when I was out (sometimes as soon as I stepped out of the door). Mainly in the afternoons & also when my baby is awake. My baby does not like her phone cos she will make some sound and pushed it away each time she saw me looking at it. I did not speak to her immediately but monitored for abt 3mths. At the same time, I also noticed sometimes the things looked the same as before I left. The last straw came when I saw a call out one sat morning lasting more than 50min & I left 3 kids (4,6,8yrs) with her plus some hsework at home. I did not want to confront her cos I know I will not be able to chk her phone after that but I had to for the safety of my kids. She denied but admitted after I asked her why she had so may calls (sometimes more than 10calls) a day. She was very angry with us that we chk ed her phone. I was very upset & said something nasty. She was blacked faced for a few weeks and it was CNY and my parents/MIL asked me why she was so black faced to pple??? I apologised to her sometime later for the remarks I made. To cut the long story short, she did not stop using in the day or till late at nite and she hid her phone away or carry with her all the time esp in the toilet. A few wks ago, I asked her what she did one of the afternoon cos I noticed some hsework not done, she was very defensive and argued back to me and I said you can go back home. I said something , she argued back each time and I told her to start packing. I asked her so where do you think you can go. She said embassy?? Imagine telling the embassy pple that I came cos my mam said no HP during day (nite ok from 9.30 to 11/11.30pm) I called my DH to come back early to settle this cos I am on the verge of bursting already. My DH is a very patient man and explained to her why I behaved like this (cos I am a mother of 4 & she is single) and that even at workplace, it is not ok to chit chat & neglect your work. She told me and my DH that she cannot stop using during day. She sort of cooled down later & I also decided that its too tiring to continue in this way when there is no trust anymore. Reason why I cannot allow HP in day is very simple-I am a sahm with 4kids (2,4,6 ,8yrs), at any pt in time, got kids plus hsewk during the day, I share the wkload by bringing kids out with me for marketing/errand/school runs when I see that there is hsework/cooking to be done. plus my hse on high flr and got no grills yet. Imagine my frustration when I had a hard time at the supermkt cos baby does not want to sit at the trolley & I come back to find out that she used phone while I brought the kids out so as to relieve her. My trolley is always very full as you can imagine(diapers/milk powder etc). Sometime, the cashier is so helpful and help me push to the car.cos I can’t carry baby one hand and pushed the heavy trolley…sometimes some kind soul behind me also help me…sigh… -
Just curious, do u all raise yr maids salary after her loan or stick to the same salary recommended for 2 yrs. Do u give bonus as an incentive?
-
I gave mine a bonus at year end. So far I only gave one maid an increment after 1 yr. Caused she was tip-top std ... I like....
And no I didnt give any of them any increment when they completed their loan. Basically just stick to the same until after 1 year then maybe you can access her. -

My maid started with one off day & $350. After each contract expiry , she gets increment plus at least 3mths bonus and additional off day. Her pay is now $500 plus 2 days off and actually could have been 4days off if not of phone issue. My SIL gives 5mths bonus plus 4off days for her maid of more than 15yrs... -
