Though already secured place at SJIJ, will still pray to get into CHS (somehow!). We live so near and it’‘’ really be ideal to just walk to school. Logistically not ideal at SJIJ, esp in pm session. But i guess, alot of bishan mommies wish the same too ie CHS. Sigh…

2004 lowest birth rate but more boys than girls. And it seems that all the boys born that year stays in Bishan!!! Argh…

Somehow I am not surprised about the standard of Chinese at SJIJ. My hubby is also an old boy n ended up taking Malay as 2nd language instead. Sigh, will put my boy on waiting list at CHS n ATS then and pray hard. I strongly believe that Chinese is impt. I sucked too at the language and has learnt the importance of the language now

        that I am working.
I, on the other hand, realised that there was no correlation between what I ought to have known in school and what I know now (albeit still very little) 😄

But, of course I try not to let my kids know how I feel about the language! Told me parents that they should have let me take Malay since we spoke English and Malay at home (Peranakan, lah)

Good luck, Gingy! [BTW, would I know your husband?I am class of '79 from St Mike's and '83 from SJI]

Yes, I am most definitely younger.... but not by much .... 46 means SJI class of '80.

I would know some of his classmates ..

Dean of Law School should be in his cohort. His son is in SJIJ (or was).

So would people like James Moria, James Leong ...

So now that the \"guaranteed\" Phases 1 and 2A are over, let's have a quick look at the highlights.

              Ai Tong
              - Very slight increase of TUR (2%) over historical. However, the cumulative TUR is now 78%. There is significant risk that there will be balloting under 1km for both Phases 2B and 2C this year, just like it happened in 2006 when the TUR at Phase 2A was 81%. Bad news for PVs.

              Catholic High
              - A massive total increase of 22% of Phase 1+2A TUR vs historical brought the cummulative TUR to 91%, leaving only 9% for Phases 2B and 2C. This is the highest in Singapore (the 2nd highest is ACSP @ 84% followed by Princess Elizabeth and NYPS @ 82%). There will be balloting in both Phase 2B and 2C this year, and only those under 1km need apply. My heartfelt sorry for those who did PV for this particular exercise.

              Kuo Chuan Presby
              - Not much changes this year. But the situation in CHS may encourage parents to give up on CHS and go for KCPS instead. So balloting will happen in Phase 2C - the question is whether it will be for those under 1km or 1-2km.

Yes, Chinese is impt but my mom also reminded me not to put my kid into a super cheena school coz we don't speak Chinese at home... it would be too stressful for the kid (and us) once in upper primary when they fast forward Higher Chinese. I think, if the kid is good in languages, they will do well in Chinese and English, even at angmoh-pai schools. Plus SJIJ seems to produce a lot of lawyers (mentioned at Novena schools forum). If SJIJ is nearer to my home or don't need to ballot, I honestly won't mind to put my son there.

fyi, there is NO super cheena school in singapore anymore

having said that, being good in CL in school does not mean every one in the family must turn into mandarin speaking in 文言文 lar.......have no fear !

Dear Gingerbread Man, Cherrygal, Gecko & Smurf,

CHS teaches higher chinese but your son does not have to take higher chinese during PSLE. It is your choice when the time comes, I think in P5.

This gives an opportunity for "late bloomers" in chinese to take to the language and if he has no confidence by then, by all means don’t sit for the higher chinese paper. The idea of CHS is that the kids learn more and have an edge over those schools which teach only normal chinese.

Chinese is a problem with most, if not all Singaporean families as we speak so little of it at home. My experience is to start them reading chinese books young, this makes a lot of difference as the learning curve is very steep once they start P1.

Well, at least they are good at English. Guess will have to ensure my boy gets extra coaching in Chinese outside of school then. BTW, just put my boy at Jiang Education Centre at Fu Lushou building for Chinese language. Heard they are pretty good. Can turn a lousy student to an elite one! Any one can testify to that here?

U have made another right move!!!

                        1. Bought an unit at Clover by the Park - 25% appreciation
                        2. Secured a place at SJIJ and later take risk at CHS
                        3. Put your boy at Jiang - right move

                        :celebrate:
