no doubt about it
Here's the track record in concrete terms.ksi:

both claim to produce lots of president scholars, direct admission to overseas unis, lots and lots of A*star, PSC scholars, etc ......the numbers are numbing

2009 and 2004 were the only years without RGS girls as president scholars from 2002-2009 and 2009 was the only year with 1 NYGH girl as president scholar. The trend may be changing but based on past output, RGS has established itself with a solid track record.
the pity of NYGH Is that their girls become Hwa Chong girls in every achievements obtained after Sec 4.
It's the same for RGS girls, they become RJC or HC girls after Sec 4 but the president scholar list includes both their secondary and JC schools. -
I can think of the following reasons that NYGH has a higher COP than RGS last year (and may happen again this year and subsequent years):
a) NYGH’s PSLE cut-off point includes HCL whereas RGS’ does not. If RGS’ cut-off point includes HCL too, they are likely to have the same cut-off point last year (i.e. 263).
b) NYGH’s school fees is cheaper than RGS’ - NYGH: $200 per month for first 2 years and $250 for next 2 years; RGS: $300 per month for 4 years. If the school fees are the same, likely more people would choose RGS as I think it has a better branding
c) Less vacancies for non-affiliated students in NYGH means cut-off point for NYGH will be driven up. However, also note that non-Chinese top girls will choose RGS not NYGH, so a larger pool of applicants for RGS will drive her cut-off point up. Probably both have their own advantage here.
I think points a) & b) above help NYGH to achieve a higher cut-off point. -
Since NY COP includes higher Chinese, does it means that all children must have HC before can apply to NY?
I know of some RGSS students do not take HC. -

Didn't think of that. So NY's COP is including HCL? If that's the case then possibly RGS and NY's COP is similar if comparing apples to apples.I can think of the following reasons that NYGH has a higher COP than RGS last year (and may happen again this year and subsequent years):

You don't need to do HCL in primary school to apply to NYGH. But you are expected to take HCL in secondary school.Since NY COP includes higher Chinese, does it means that all children must have HC before can apply to NY?
I know of some RGSS students do not take HC.
There are students who don't do HCL in RGS, but VERY few. -

THanks for the super quick reply. Yesyes, the number is so low in RGSS for non HCL students. So, all NYGHS students need to take HCL then; it will be so hard for Pri students w/o HCL background.

True, but my point was (I wasn't clear in my explanation) that last year a lot of NYPS girls chose to go to NYGH compared to other years because they liked the principal. And because they could get in based on lower affiliation scores, more places were taken up. Hence there were fewer places left for non-affiliates. So those few who managed to get in were the top few thereby leading to a higher COP for NYGH last year.jtoh:

Usually the afflication will lower down the COP of the school? since they give 'discounts' to afflicated gals right?
So that means there are a good number of gals with very high PSLE scores chose NYGH over RGS.
Actually it does seem to me that NYGH is getting more and more popular.
Out of curiosity I checked out the statistics for PSLE aggregate scores of both NY and RGS for 2009.
Nanyang
Lowest non-affiliated 263
Highest non-affiliated 283
Non-affliated mean 268
Lowest affiliated 250
Highest affiliated 276
Mean affliated 257
RGS
Lowest 260
Highest 285
Mean 267
If you look at the highest aggregates, RGS is 285 vs NYGH 283, so the top girls are still choosing RGS over NYGH. Also, this list does not include those who got in via DSA. Most of the top 10 PSLE girls are in RGS.
That said, NY is probably gaining popularity and it'll be interesting to see what happens this year.
good points
BTW, those scores above 280 can be counted with all the fingers on one hand, boys included
a more representative measure is to see the median score
Actually, there are 13 people who scored more than 283 at last year's PSLE (including boys). -

If you go in without HCL background they will do all they can to help you.

Is your dd doing HCL in secondary school?
My old DD is going HCL (Sec 1 this year) but my younger DD (PSLE this Yr) is no taking HCL. So it is good to know that it is still possible to apply for NY (if she meets the COP).
