      Maths Enrichment Courses

Almost every year, even before the ink had dried on the answer scripts, tears started flowing and complaints were made to the media about the tough PSLE paper on mathematics.

Tears were shed over a few non–routine type of questions, not textbook-type of questions. The questions were not so direct and may or may not be taught in schools. Naturally, parents are concerned and may want to shop for enrichment courses for their children.

Wish to seek views from fellow members on Math Enrichment Centres which their children had attended and benefitted from.

I started my P3 son on Kumon early this year. That is late by any standards, but his routine calculations have improved by leaps and bounds. Doesn’t help much with the type of modelling questions that schools are so fond of these days, though.

            Hi Chiefkiasu

My son is also Pri 3. I heard so much of Kumon for Math. Can you elaborate how does your son benefit through the programme.

My son usually scores above 90, so I am not concern now. But when I look at some of the Math questions in his worksheets, it can get quite confusing. I want to prepare him in advance for tricky questions which I heard there will be more to come in the exam. Is Kumon good at preparing kids for this? Any advice from you?

            Thanks

              I strongly recommend Beestar.

              http://www.beestar.org/index.jsp
It is a website full of free math practice, English programs, social studies and Gifted & Talented programs. My little James started school last year, but he really hated the boring math. Then his teacher recommended Beestar to us. He began to like doing the weekly math practice, because there are interesting stories and vivid pictures for kids. He also likes checking the honor roll every week, and he is so happy when his name appears. Registering as parent, I can receive the Email from beestar every week to notice me how James was doing in beestar. I am considering registering other programs for him.

                Hi Chief

I have a question for parents with children doing Kumon math. This is regarding the amount/number of pages/worksheets given to the child to complete daily. My elder daughter is doing 2A moving on to A - she is given 2 booklets (20 pages) per day. That seems a lot to me - she is in K2 this yr and started Kumon 3 mths ago.

Is this kind of amount the norm for kids that age ? When she goes on to Level A should it reduce to just 1 booklet (10 pages) ?

                  Hi,

My K2 son is also with Kumon and just started this year. He is doing the +9 and +10 currently so I am not too sure which level we are talking about.

But I am just wondering if we should let him continue or move him to other course when he is in P1. Eg. the problem sums, etc… I don’t think are being touch on in Kumon.

My girl is currently attending Mighty Maths. She only started around SA1 when she saw that her brother is able to do calculation so much faster. She asked to go to kumon but the timing just wasn’t right for us. So we tried Mighty Maths as the timing is very flexible. I can’t really tell if Mighty Maths is good. Will monitor in my girl’s SA2 results as she only manage to get 84 during SA1 as there was lots of careless mistakes and things she wasn’t sure of. So I am telling her that if she don’t get 90 & above, then we will rethink abt her maths class since she asked for it.

                    Hi all expert out there,

I am trying to figure out which is better CMA or MPM for my 4year old boy.

                    Appreciate your views.

                    Thanks
                    🙂

                      Hi

CMA involves abacus training. MPM is more towards math enrichment, covering math concepts and some logic thinking sums.
What do you intend to expose your boy to?

You can find more info on the various math enrichment in http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewforum.php?f=7.

I think MPM is more \"practical\" to prepare children for Primary schools.
