All About Full-Time Maids

Now I am thinking if I should inform her beforehand that I am sending her back once i get my new maid. I am definitely not allowing her to transfer as I feel she is doing a disservice to whoever that employs her.

That's what i did to my helper too when she dun want to work. I told her I'll send her back to where she came from. Anyway budget airtickets are not costly nowadays. She was hoping for a transfer which I felt was chosing employers. Now they really like to pick & choose who they want to work for rather than the other way.

Niway, if husband decides to have a maid, I still have to stick with Indonesian. Sorry, I do not have any friends who employ Myanmar maids. Perhaps you can read this forum and see any feedback. Not sure if there are any Myanmar or Filipino maids who are Muslim right? A friend of mine switch to employing Filipino maid after similar incident like mine. So far she said her maid is good. Well, all this is luck.

Anybody employs a maid specifically to look after the elderly before? Especially an elderly with medical conditions, not necessarily invalid but need help to move around a little, go toilet, bath, brush teeth, take medication or do injections etc.

So far how do you choose such a maid? My agent told me to get from Indo. (not Phil), since the hygene standard not as good so maid won't mind doing cleaning for elderly etc. What do you think?

Also do we need to send them for training? How to draw the line because maid is not a nurse right? To what extend can we expect them to care for our elderly properly?

I am thinking of getting a maid for this purpose but not very confident I can get a good one who is willing to look after elderly. Most seems to prefer children.

Any advice appreciated!

I have heard of pp around me who did that. I think it’s difficult to say if Indo/Fil is the better choice - it’s so person dependent. I have this impression that if initiative and action is needed from the maid, better to get Filipino. Just state down their duties, I see from various postings that nowadays maids like to choose their employers also.

But be aware of what they may be up to. My mum’s best friend hires a maid for her senile father. I heard that one of the maid was carrying on an affair with the gas delivery man (probably in the same house even); another would bully the old man (strange marks - probably pinching).

Desertwind, I know personally of a maid who was hired to care for an invalid elderly. You have to be very careful with them because that maid, R, climbed all over the employer’s head because no one was home to see what she was up to. She was rude, unhygienic, abusive… She had numerous ‘boyfriends’ and had enough money to buy quite a bit of jewellery. Where she got the money from we can all guess. R took liberties because she knew the elderly person couldn’t complain about her.

I think filipinas would still b a better choice. A lot of filipinas do like to be care givers. I wont trust Indons when it comes to injections and medicine, they tend to give as they like and not take instructions for long. Besides, when it comes to training in the hospital, they rather train a filipina.

Thanks for your replies! Today lunch time I just ran to agent and grab the one & only transfer maid available. Bo Pian liao, very urgent, no time to think. Interviewed her though & agent said nothing much wrong with her except she has already changed employer 2 times since Feb this year. I am the third one already.

If you are looking for a maid to look after elderly, you can look out for Filipinas with Certificate in Nursing.


When I was younger, one of our maids has a Cert in Nursing from some college. Her family was too poor to let her continue with her studies so she seeked work as a maid. She was very patient with my grandfather (he had stroke and was bedridden) on top of having to care of 2 young kids (my bro and me).

We’ve had good Filipina maids before but now, we prefer Indon maids.
In fact, we just brought home our 2nd Indon maid (to work at my mum’s place only). Though language is an issue, we’ve picked up enough Malay to communicate what we need her to do.

Point taken, I will not let this new maid do the injections/medication. As for training in hospital, me & mum will get trained first then teach the maid. You are right, I think even in the hospital, they seem to be allowing maids/helpers almost round the clock to accompany the patients because I see that the maids/helpers actually lightens the nurses' workload quite a bit to make the patients more comfortable.
