It is not necessary to take any grade except for grade 5. However your teacher must have a reason to for your child to take it. Maybe to motivate your child or to see where she stand or let her try an exam. Do talk to your teacher

By 8yo must be at grade 5, by 10 yo must be at grade 8 :!:
I suppose it's possible to join at grade 7, if the child is not 'over-age'

Doing ABRSM dip with NAFA or NAFA’s dip?


Actually there are a lot of good prof other than NAFA around. Even NAFA students will have to get a prof to assist - part of their course.

If it's young kid, it'd be Dip ABRSM with NAFA, not NAFA's dip - which is post secondary school course, right?

Yup so if is ABRSM dip, if she is able to go gr 7 at young age, she can actually do dip with the teacher she is with, if her teacher teaches dip as she is doing fine with her existing teacher.

So far, most that i've heard seem to do their grade 8 by 10 or 11years old latest, so just nice - before psle. Then after that, quite often many leave nafa to yes, like \"pianojazzy\" says, to study under a professor or audition to join YST young musician programme.

i personally don't see a point in joining nafa if the child is doing well outside with his own instructor.

But if for a young child, yes, I would consider putting him/her in nafa. I think it at gives a rather well-rounded music education (the expectations notwithstanding).

Depends on scenario. Could be the reverse.

Say if the child is seeking performance platform, then joining Nafa at grade 7, completed grade 8, continued with diploma + performance platform. I guess no hard or fast rule.

I believe a child with talent shines anywhere, private teacher or music school. The only difference is probably not much public performance opportunity with a private teacher

Then again, if my dd has the good fortune & affinity to meet a wonderful private teacher, I would ask her to stay put. A good mentor is so hard to come by
