When it comes to schools' needs...these are very different from what we do best at work, especially if you are working in the financial sector (etc)...I attended the same talk by ex-principal 2 years ago. I offered para-legal and financial services. I was asked whether i would consider traffic warden and i agreed. alas, i was not selected even though i stayed within 1km. There were many parents willing to volunteer at all costs. The school selected 40 from over 200 of which half were within 1km.
there is not sure in for 1km for PV.
baking, musical talent, gardening, speech & drama, make-up, website maintenance, blah blah....it is hard for the school to require 80 hours of para-legal and financial services... -

Does anyone knows the no.of PV for next year registration for less than 1km & within 2km for NYPS?
Honestly, no one knows for sure...and the makeup can change from now to next year -
Hi Juanthedragon,
Sometimes, the parents’ expertise may not be what the school requires for PVs. A friend of mine watered the plants at RGPS every morning. Another friend did art & craft with the gals in the afternoon session. Parents do feel short-changed that they have to do all these type of work.
A friend asked me to write into Nanyang to do traffic warden, but as I’m staying more than 2km, I don’t want to do 80 hours for nothing…furthermore, that was the hot year for Dragon kids. -

Hi i3mum,
If you’re staying more than 1km away from NYPS, I hope you are prepared to look at another school. Nanyang, MGS, RGPS, Pei Hwa have balloting for those staying 1km away. As for PVs, nobody knows how many a school takes in, nor what are the qualities schools are looking for. -
it is very true that PVs for the schools are critically dependent on the needs of the schools - areas where they lack resources. It it not what you can do best, nor your expertise
can a doctor do traffic warden duty ? will a doctor do traffic warden duty ?
even say for eg being an architect could be useful but for only one occasion. after the building is done, the school does not need that any more
or being a film maker, after the school has produced the film for the year, it is done. the school is not going to make a film every other year
being able to man the sick bay and the dental clinic in school would definitely be helpful
the mundane duties like gardening, maintenance, and traffic control would be kind of in perennial needs…so, hopeful PVs, pitch your services intelligently -

start getting to know who and who in the board of directors or alumni. It is who knows you and not you know who that matter. she/he may sponsor your child for p1 registration and that’s the surest method.
So, start rubbing shoulders now…start by donating to the school indoor hall or participate in school’s CCA i.e. floral exhibition…etc…
