I'd think your best bet is to move to within 1km of SJIJ and hope for the best. SJIJ doesn't have a PV scheme and if your son is not baptised, then you essentially have only one shot in Phase 2C, so living within 1km is crucial.Hmm...i wouldn't baptise my son just for getting into a school of choice. I believe he should grow up and decide for himself, esp since my husband belongs to another religion.
What if we have 2 schools of choice? Since we can't register for both schools at the same time, how do some parents get around it? For us its probably either SJIJ or Catholic High - how can we maximise our chance of getting our son into either?
If you have time, you can try community work but that route is very challenging. Read more in this thread: http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420
Catholic High is notoriously difficult to get into. You would need to live within 1km, be a PV at the school and still have to participate in a ballot that has worse odds than placing a single chip in a roulette game!
When are you registering? Take the time to read through all the threads, and work out your strategies. Best of luck!

Well, I learnt my lesson. I wouldn’t bet on cat high again if I have the choice.

No, I don't believe the child needs to be baptized (for Methodist anyway). The parent, yes.
It really depends on individual churches. Mine requires both parents and the child to be baptised and a member of the church.
Also, parents must be ACTIVE members who attend church regularly and participate/help out in activities.
Seen too many cases of parents who change church just for the priority into MGS and ACS. -

No offence, but as Catholics, it is our religious duty to baptise and raise our children as Catholics, regardless of our hubby's religion. That's in the canon law I think.Hmm...i wouldn't baptise my son just for getting into a school of choice. Alternatively, you can be a PV. Don't count on Catholic High unless you are even within 1km of the school. Even that does not help. You will need lotsa blessings from up above to even get in. -

Hi, any reason why you wouldn't bet on cat high? We live closer to cat high (about 2km plus) than SJIJ (about 4km plus), so techinically we have better chance at Cat High. -
cherrygal:
Yes, I agree it's under the canon law, but each family is different. I'd rather baptise my son when he decides he would like to be Catholic, rather than simply baptising him for the wrong reasons (like getting him into a school of choice).

Reg Cat High, are you saying that even if I were a PV but I do not live within 1km, i can kiss my chances goodbye? -
lynettewoo:
Yup, you can kiss Cat Hi goodbye unless you move house. Balloting each year is only for those within 1km for both phase 2B and 2C. They wouldn't even let you PV if you live so far away. Some have PVed, live opp the school and yet not get in.

Seems like SJIJ is a better alternative. If you live so far away, you can only stand a better chance at SJIJ at Phase 2B (that still requires balloting for >2km). At Phase 2C, you should live within 2km of SJIJ coz this year, those >2km didn't stand a chance. To get in at Phase 2B, you can only bank on the catholic status or RC coz SJIJ doesn't take in PVs.
Go do grassroots work as the last resort. -

I dun think any Catholic parent out there will baptise their kids just for the schools... it's just our obligation as Catholics to baptise them and raise as Catholics. In fact, many Catholic children also attend non-catholic schools and vice-versa. -

We live about 2km from Cat High but more than 4km from SJIJ. Can I try to do PV at Cat High? Another query - possible for me to register my son at SJIJ if my mum has a place near there? How do we go about changing the address? Do we change our address or simply register as my mum's address? How much in advance do we have to make ths change?

What if we do the following:
1) Try to register at Phase 2B at Catholic High with the PV (if they allow us PV)
2) In the event we don't get Cat High, we go to SJIJ for balloting at Phase 2C (If we manage to register under my mum's address)
wat the the odds we can get either? -
