I found out quite a number of her classmates attend tuition for all subjects (except ss). Just wondering when is it necessary to attend tuition ? Has become a norm to attend tuition irregardless of results ? For GEP, are marks ranging from mid 70s - mid 80s still considered ok ?
Depending on the subject, mid 70s - mid 80s is quite alright. You should be given a breakdown of the highest, lowest and median score in the cohort and so long as your child is around average and not too far down the bottom it should be fine. Not everyone can excel in every subject. In fact, it is very uncommon to have a child excel in every subject. If a child is scoring near baseline or below baseline for most of his subjects the teacher will be paying very special attention to him. šŸ™‚

they are only satisfied when they get 100 marks for math and science and near 100 for EL & CL and above 90 for HCL.....

wow..then they can skip level liao.....had ever asked my son whether he want to go for tuition..he told me...'don't even think abt it...' 😐

and save some money[/quote]We have so far not spend a single cent on tuition for my DS, and the threat of sending him to tuition was good enough to motivate him on doing better with his school work.

EL and CL is typical around 70-80 and high 80s for science and maths in GEP.

Wow, you are very well informed. Those are the school GEP average score. I guess I have to use more of the \"threat\" to motivate DS further.

you see, the GEPpers are tested nationally uniformly as all their exam papers are set by the GEP branch, so regardless of which GEP schools they are from, their standard is the same....hence RI takes the overall average mark of 80% as a cut off for GAT....

Just a thought...actually what constitutes training? Does going through some Olympiad Maths sums to expose the child and explaining the difficult concepts to him equals training? What do the centres do that are different from what we can do at home, other than the drilling. Of course by going through concepts, I mean just explaining, not drilling and having lots of repetitions to make him just remember the steps to attack similar types of questions. :?

I guess your child isn't DSA age yet. šŸ˜„ Yes, it's published at the RI/RGS NYGH websites that GEP students need to score >80% to be exempted from the GAT test. Of course this may change through the years.

So there's time to encourage your son to work harder.
