      Hi ,

Can anyone share the pros and cons of Kumon and MPM? I am thinking of sending my son for either one to brush up his Maths---very weak.

DS was with Jelic (K2 level of MPM) and continue MPM for P1. MPM will have some \"toy\" for hands-on. Heard that Kumon is basically doing test paper after test paper and test paper ...
Why dont u chk it out w Kumon?

I sent my elder son to Kumon and stopped when he completed level G (algebra) when he was P4.

Kumon's method is building foundation in additions, substractions, multiplication and division and advances to the next level when a student clears the test for each level.

There are a lot of repetitions. The student will be doing the same set of worksheet till he passes the timing and accuracy of each level worksheet.
To me it is drilling till he can do add/substract/times/divide with minimum effort. It does not follow the school syllabus. No problem sum at lower level and very few at higher level, mostly mechanical computation of the 4 operations.

I did not have to worry about his 4 operations. I just taught my son the problem sum, making sure he understand the question and the technical part I left it to him.

        Hi,

I also did check with Kumon with their teaching method, after knowing, I decide not to enroll my DD. Cos if I enroll my DD, I am afraid that I need to enroll some other maths lesson for the problem sums.

The Question show a face of a clock and instructed the students to tell the time using \"o'clock\" or \"half past\".

          My question is,

          - is \"half past 12\" acceptable or must it be \"half past twelve\"
          - likewise \"3 o'clock\" or \"three o'clock\"

          :?

              Hi Zhen,

So Kumon is only better for lower primary or Kindergarten kids? Was initially thinking about giving it a try but after seeing some of the posts about it on the ksp forum, might give it a miss. But wonder why are they so popular if they only teach the basic math?

Number is fine unless they specify, write the answer in words.

                  Kumon is like
laying the foundation of a house,
                  the stronger the foundation,
the higher the house can be build,

                  like the basic of maths.
So, this shouldn't be undermined too.

Different education centres have different phillosophies.
So parents have to look out for the one that suits their child's needs
                  to reap the best results.

                        Hi parents,

Is it ok for P1 kids to still count using their hands, I am a bit worried as my child keeps counting using her hands, for example when I ask her what is
9 + 5, she must use her hands to count, is that normal for P1 or should I be worried?
