      Hi, Zann,

My son attended the HCL tuition class at Eduplus. It seems to help a lot for his oral, his compo improvement is not so significant. It is especially obvious at P5 when he attend the Oral class and compo/cimpre class. DS is more fluent in Mandarin now, he can't even express in full sentence in P3. And He couldn't even order soup noodle at P1 in the canteen.

I tried out a new method this year with him besides the weekly P6 PSLE prep class at Eduplus. I bought a 成语300则 (湖北长江出版社集团, $8.95) from Popular Book store, and ask him to write down and memorize 2 成语a day. And give him examples on how to use it (1 example is given in the book, and it comes with a VCD, too)。 The story of the 成语comes with Han yu pin yin (汉语拼音), so your child should be able to read。 Eh, some parents guidance is probably needed, so preferably parent should have good Chinese (in order to explain some of the more difficult examples).

I wanted my son to memorize the 成语last year, but he was not very receptive and refused to do it. Somehow, DS is more receptive about Chinese in P6。 He used to hate Chinese. I can't teach him at all. And he refused to speak Mandarin to me, too.

DS has a booklet called : 'Chinese Pro words' to record down what he learned dialy. Need to get him to re-cap so that he will not forget, though. I would also go thru with him, he can make use of the so called 'pro' words in what kind of compo situation.

For DS's case, persistence is the key. 2 成语 a day. On days that he was too tired, I would remind him that he still 'owe' me, and can 'repay' me the next day. Seems to work 😃

BTW, the HCL teacher in school gave them quite a lot of notes on Compo writing and Oral exams preparation, too. But DS doesn't like the HCL teacher, and lazy to go thru the teacher's notes (except for Oral). I don't remember my daughter got that when she was in P3 mainstream.

        vlim:
I don't think the new IP school has school based gifted programme for those geppers who maintain their gep status when they go sec 1. So definitely and logically, the geppers should aim for school like RI, HCI, RGS where they offer SBGP for them...

        Hi vlim :imanisland: ,
NYGH also offer SBGE programme right? Actually, I am kinda confused.....so there are still gifted programmes for geppers in secondary school? I am totally clueless to the mechanism behind this.....frankly i tot they have scrapped the GEP programmes for secondary school with the implementation of IP school and it will be integration for the geppers and non-geppers once in secondary school. So, the SBGE programmes offered in secondary school is open to all students based on their merit or just to exisiting geppers who have been selected from the interview. :?

            GEP Status in Secondary Levels

1.What happens after the primary GEP?

After Primary 6, retention of the GEP status and promotion to the next level of gifted education is based on:

■performance in the GEP from Primary 4 to 6, including a pass in Social Studies
■attitude towards work and the enrichment programme
            ■performance at the PSLE
2.What percentage of the Primary 6 GEP pupils meets the criteria for retaining the GEP status?

Each year approximately 99% of the pupils meet the criteria. For more information about provisions for GEP pupils in secondary and pre-university levels, please visit FAQs on Post Primary GEP Provisions

😄 The SBGP of secondary school is diff from primary centralised gep whereby they will learn the same things and take the same common tests.

SBGP are mann by individual school with advise from MOE gifted education department...

Thanks for the info, vlim !

I wish some of the newly announced IP schools will have SBGE prog.

Out of the current 7 IP schools with SBGE prog, which ones are stronger in languages ? dd is weaker in math so I wonder if her options are more ltd ?

for the first batch of IP schools, they are all all-rounder with the exception of NUSH focusing on math & science

weaker in maths then I think NUSHS shall not be her choice ...other then that, as long as overall she is above average..I think she can opt for any school she like such as nyps, rgs and so forth...other then DSA..she can also select sec school base on her psle results...

What is the gifted status for? Why is it good to retain the status in sec sch?if GEPpers opt for a sec sch without SBGE prog, do they lose their gifted status?

                      I am really clueless …

i think with the geppers status in sec school, then they are qualified to take the school based gifted programme just like passing the gep p3 screening test then they can enrol into the 3 years of ge programme from p4 to p6 to further test their ability and further nurture them with the programme that suits them..

So if they opt to go sec school without SBGE then..they will not able to take the gifted education programme..and whether got ge status or not..I suppose..no one will bother abt it as he or she will be taking the same syllebus as the rest...
