        firebird:

        Your reference and solution is very clear.

        Dear firebird,

        A very good morning to you too,
        My younger sister (P5) will be taking PSLE 2011, so our family is very worried for her. That's why I have to keep track of the current P6/PSLE Maths questions and know the current trend that the P6 student must know how to answer correctly. I hope that someone like Uncle Dharma or Uncle Tianzhu may wish to create a blog to provide P6 Maths solutions for past years' questions from top schools like 2010, 2009 and so on. Just only the 18 questions in the paper 2 will be sufficient. Maybe, KSP Chief may consider creating a section in this forum whereby P6 Maths detailed solutions are worked out by resident Maths solvers like Uncle Dharma/Uncle Tianzhu in KSP forum categorised by school and level. This will allow
        anyone to refer to them for reference instead of duplicating and posting the same questions again and again in the Maths thread.
        firebird:
        I am going to call Mr. Jeremy at 90216478 for the 2010

        P6 Prelim papers. Could you kindly recommend any other source or specific shop? Hope not asking you too much!
        From KSP forum-http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?, these are the possible places for selling top papers:

        1. Bras Basah Complex - a number of shops are selling.
        2. Near Hougang plaza - Blk 804 (not 100% sure), ground floor
        3. Near Kovan MRT station - near DBS bank
        4. Toa Payoh Central, next to KFC, near MRT, near an Indian Bank, at the
        corner.
        5. Two stalls selling these papers in Thomson Plaza.
        6. Tampines Mart - Sam 93397910.
        7. Bukit Merah Centre (Outside NTUC)
        8. Peace Center
        9. Marine Parade

        You are always welcome. Hope that my help is useful to you in one way or another.
        😉

        Hi Vanilla Cake,

        I'll be glad to contribute whatever I am
        able to handle.

        Check your PM.

          Dear Firebird,
          Sure and I will try my best at least during this holiday. When schools reopen next Monday, I will be not hanging around in KSP forum. Don't worry too much, with the support of Uncle Dharma and Uncle Tianzhu, all your Maths problem sums will be solved.

          Another thing to tell you, my P5 younger sister cried after browsing through these 10 sets of P6 Prelim papers. She could not solve most of the problem sums.Haha.
          😉

          Hi Uncle Dhama,
          Already replied PM.

              Hi all,

              Need help with the below maths questions :

              1) Tap P and Tap Q take 4 hours to fill a tank.
              Tap Q and Tap R take 5 hours to fill the same tank.
              Tap P and Tap R take 3 hours to complete the same task.
              How long does it take to fill the tank if all 3 taps are running at the same time ?

              2) RGPS 2010 P6 Prelim paper 2 qn 18
              There are more pupils in School A than School B.
              30% of the pupils in School A is 45 more than 40% of the pupils in School B.
              If 10% of the pupils in School A leaves to join School B, there will be 200 more pupils in School A than School B.

              (a) How many pupils are there in School B ? (ans : 1200)

              (b) How many percent less pupils are there in School B than School A ? Leave your answer as fraction in the simplest form. (ans : 31 3/7)

              Thank you very much!

                How long does it take to fill the tank if all 3 taps are running at the same time ?
                Tap P + Tap Q -> 4 hours for 1 tank
                Tap P + Tap Q -> 1 hour for ¼ of tank

                Tap Q + Tap R -> 5 hours for 1 tank
                Tap Q + Tap R -> 1 hour for 1/5 of tank

                Tap P + Tap R -> 3 hours for 1 tank
                Tap P + Tap R -> 1 hour for â…“ of tank

                Tap P + Tap Q + Tap Q + Tap R + Tap P + Tap R = 2 Tap P + 2 Tap Q + 2 Tap R = 47/60 of tank for 1 hour
                Tap P + Tap Q + Tap R = 47/120 of tank for 1 hour
                1 tank will take -> 120/47 h = 2 and 26/47 h to fill up if all 3 taps are running at the same time.

                Note: Pls check if this answer is correct or not.

                (b) How many percent less pupils are there in School B than School A ? Leave your answer as fraction in the simplest form. (ans : 31 3/7)
                30% of A = 40% of B+45
                100% of A = 40/30x100% of B + 45/30x100 = 400/3% of B + 150

                Remaining pupils in School A:
                90% of 400/3 % of B + 90% of 150
                120% of B + 135

                New number of pupils in School B:
                10% of (400/3%of B + 150) + 100% of B
                340/3% of B + 15

                120% of B + 135 = 340/3% of B + 15 + 200
                20/3% of B = 80
                100% of B = 80x3/20x100 = 1200

                (a) Number of pupils in School B = 1200

                School A -> 400/3% of B + 150 = (400/3x1200)/100 + 150 = 1750
                Difference = 1750-1200 = 550
                550/1750x100% = 31 and 3/7%

                (b) The percent less pupils in School B than School A = 31 and 3/7%

                Pls wait for Uncle Dharma/Uncle Tianzhu and others for better methods to solve this question.
                Thanks.

                  Hi,

                  Where did this question come from?

                  Using a method that avoids fractions in the working:

                  In 60 hours,
                  Tap P and Tap Q can fill up 15 tanks
                  Tap Q and Tap R can fill up 12 tanks
                  Tap P and Tap R can fill up 20 tanks
                  2P and 2Q and 2R can fill up 15 + 12 + 20 = 47 tanks
                  P and Q and R can fill up 47/2 = 23.5 tanks

                  To fill up one tank,
                  P and Q and R will take 60/23.5 or 120/47 or 2 26/47 hours

                    Could you pls help me to post 3 questions with diagrams from 2010 P6 Prelim from top schools? My access to Flickr has problem and I am trying to use other website to upload diagrams/pictures. These 3 questions are interesting and hope that Uncle Dharma/Uncle Tianzhu etc can rope in their help to solve:

                    1. Nanyang Primary School P6 Prelim 2010 Maths paper 2 Q18 [5 marks]- To find area of the shaded parts. Answer given is 9.12 cm²
                    The figure below is created using the curved lines (arcs) of quadrants with radius 1 cm, 2cm and 3 cm. Find the area of the shaded parts. (Take pie as 3.14)

                    2. Maha Bodhi School P6 Prelim 2010 Maths paper 2 Q15 [4 marks]-Speed question.
                    There are 30 steps between Levels 5 and 6. A toy robot takes 13â…“ seconds to move up 20 steps if it moves up the first 10 steps at its highest speed and the next 10 steps in its lowest speed. It will take 14 seconds to reach Level 6 from Level 5 if it moves up the first 24 steps at its highest speed and the next 6 steps at its lowest speed. Find the shortest time it will take to reach Level 6 from Level 5.
                    Answer Given : 10 seconds

                    3. Maha Bodhi School P6 Prelim 2010 Maths paper 2 Q18 [5 marks]-Speed question.
                    Tom is travelling on a bus that is moving at a uniform speed of 30 km/h. If he alights at Bus Stop A, he will walk home by Route A which is 800m away from his flat. He can also alight 1 km down the road at Bus Stop B and take the 730 m Route B home. If Tom walks at a uniform speed of 40 m/min, find:
                    (a) the difference in time when he alights at the two different bus stops.
                    (b) the earliest time he can reach home if he boards the bus from the interchange 20 km away at 1305.

                    Answers given: (a) 40 min (b) 1405

                    Without the diagram/picture posted for these 3 questions, it's impossible to solve them at all. Pls help to upload these diagram/picture.

                    Thanks in advance.

                      Hi favianboy,
                      Could you advise the source of your question? Seems to be incomplete and in summarised form.Your question is similar to the River Valley Primary School P6 Prelim Maths 2010 Paper 2 Q17 [5 marks] :

                      Candle A and candle B are of the same length. Candle A, which is broader, can burn for 5 h while Candle B, the thinner candle, can burn for 4 h. If both candles are lighted at the same time, how long does it take for Candle A to be twice as long as Candle B?
                      Answer : 3â…“ hours

                      PS : A similar question with some changes in the numbers (posted by http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=280&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=1530 on 15 Aug 2010 had been solved and solution provided by Uncle Tianzhu in KSP forum.Refer to http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=280&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=1540 dated 18 Aug 2010 and adapt the solution to your needs.
