All About Full-Time Maids

Anna Ng:
I just got my first maid last week, seem like she is ok. Normally when they will show the \"true colour\" if they have?
Just wondering.. if the maid is new in SG, maybe preventing her from any contact with other maids might help to prevent any \"colour\" developing.. Disallow HP and allow her to call on prepaid card to her home only on weekends on fixed line etc.. might help?
My neighbor got a new maid and she totally does not let her out of the house at all, to prevent her from coming into contact with other maids who might led her astray.. seems to be quite effective..
If I were to get a maid, that's what I'll do too. And, before accepting her, I'll have to make sure she agrees to the condition of no HP allowed. If she cannot accept, then will not take this maid.
I believe that as long as the maid has minimum or nil contact with bad influences, there'll be little chance of them becoming \"bad\".. unless they already have attitude problem from the start or have prior experiences in SG. -
So do you wake her up if she doesn't wake up at 6am?
As for my maid, I make sure she sleeps by 10pm and she wakes up at 6.30am. That's 8 and a half hour sleep. I want her to have enough sleep so she can focus on her work in the daytime.janet_lee88:
My prev maids disappeared into the room AUTOMATICALLY :x at 10pm. The lights are still turned on at 11+. But they do not wake up automatically at 6am. I had to remind them bedtime is 1030pm latest and they must be awake at 6am FRESH.

TAURUS:
i used to hv maids that show colours ard 6 mths when their loans finishing soon, also came across 2 whereby work 1 wk says want to go bk agt, in the end the agts ask them work 2 mths with me then can transfer... nw this maid cm 2 days say not used to spore, want to go bk hm, agt told her hwo to go bk when her loan hasn't settled. so i guess in another few mths time when her debt going to clear, she may request to go bk hm liao... then i got to take in new maid again. hopefully she will change her mind and not go bk hm... when they request for transfer, we had to bear all the levy and wasted the insurance $ that we have paid... dun knw why we \"employer\" should bear all these costs when is the maid that dun want to work... i've been wasting all these costs for 3 times liao over this 2 yrs..[/quote]Hi Taurus,janet_lee88:

Mine started to show true colours nearing the time they finish their debt...ie after 5-6 months. 'Pattern' will show, so don't be too quick to get them clothes when they are new.
Usually my maid will show their \"True Color\" after 1 year.
In fact, I don't understand why do you has to bear all costs for maid to be replaced. I mean.... Most of the Maid Agencies will offer 2-4 Free Replacement Maid (within 6 month to 1 year). Did you check with your Maid Agency ?
Well.... I felt that once a maid requested to go home or asked for a transfer, they has no intention to stay with us for long might as well let them go. -
Angelight,
I have to knock on the door to wake her up not once but 3x. That’s why I told her even if she disappears into the room at 10pm sharp, she has to be up at 6am. My hubby was the one who asked me to wake her.
She must be busy sending sms-es back home.
So employers, DON’T let your maids mix with others and NO handphone.
At least they don’t brainwash your maids…it’s cruel but no choice. -
As per our Maid Agency’s advise, it is advisable not to allow maid to use HP. Hence, we will purchase a prepaid card for our maid once every 2 months.
From my point of view, I definitely won’t lock my maid at home and will give her certain amount of freedom as long as she notify us her whereabout. Pardon my impudence, Maids are here to work for us we have no right to "imprison" them. It all depend on the maids attitude and how we "brainwash" them. -

Don't you think we must be stronger then others in \"brainwashing\" our maid ? hahaha :lol:Angelight,

As employers, there is only a limit of brainwashing we can do. I've done that nicely with my maids but the moment they meet their own people, that's it !!! All the brainwashing I've done has gone down the drain.

My new maid has been hanging out a lot with another maid in the same condo who worked for us part time for 3 weeks when we were waiting for our maid. We suspect the part-time maid of stealing DH's sim card as his phone bill showed long-distance calls to Philippines and Dubai after she started working for us. On top of this, this maid works for an expat family and has a lot of freedom: every sun off, can work part-time when the employer is on vacation etc. We are afraid she is a bad influence to our maid, who's a 1st timer in SG. She might even lead her into stealing things
So yesterday we told our maid that we don't want her to hang out with that maid too much. We told her we're not stopping her to make friends (which is impossible for a filipino maid) but just don't want her to be close to that particular maid. Don't know if she'll listen but it seems inevitable that she'll be brainwashed by other maids eventually. -

I wouldn't use the term \"imprison\".. The important thing is, the maid must agree to the terms of employment before she'll be accepted. She can refuse it, it's her freedom or \"right\", but that means I wouldn't employ this maid.

How I'll do it is, I wouldn't give her any assignment that requires her to leave the house. My term of employment would require her to be always available in the house, although not always doing chores.
As a domestic worker, she'll need to do housework and look after the kids . Leaving the house means absence from duty. A maid is supposed to be on standby except the hours where she sleeps, isn't it the nature of work of a FT domestic worker?
Just like security guard is also not allowed to leave the building that he is guarding even if he is not on \"active\" duty. It's the job nature..
