Hi Hi all,

Just to update, you may remember my post about going to the maid agency and just grab a maid about one month ago as I needed help very urgently to look after my dad just discharged from hospital.

She was a transfer maid and we are her 3rd employer since Feb2010. Went to fetch her about 3 weeks ago and checked through her luggage on the first day (this is something I learnt here from other fellow employers!) 😉

When I first went to the agent, the agent promised that the maid would be available within one week and MOM will approve within 3 days. Turned out I waited for 2 weeks just for all the paperwork to be sorted out before I can collect the maid! Felt a bit pissed on the waiting time especially since the maid is already here and I have interviewed her. In the meantime, I suppose due to all the paperwork, insurance, liability and all they will not let me take the maid out until everything is done.

Anyway, glad to report that so far so good! This young Indon. maid works for my mother and follows her in and out. Initially she came was quite scared and glum-looking. Now can see she has settled in and more relaxed with my family and can at least smile at us! My mother is also quite nice to my maid, she will allow her to nap in the afternoon since sometimes the maid got interrupted sleep looking after my dad at night. She also will not scold her but will joke with her to get her point across.

Am relieved because last thing I need is a problem maid or problem employer (my mother, heh..heh...).
      :celebrate:
My aunts maid was due for medical a month ago, she had wanted to send the maid back but has now decided to keep her, could u share pls 😎

        Hi moonee,

I have no experience but if I were to encounter this, I think I will just take the medical form notification and send maid to see the doctor for check-up anyway! Even though pass deadline should still do since your aunt is keeping the maid. The medical is once every 6 months so this one should \"tahan\" for another few months before the ministry sends another notification again...
        :celebrate:
Since maid is due for that checkup, send her for it since she is due. Next check up should be in 6 months. No escaping.[/quote

Tks, I will advise my aunt to just send the maid .

I gave my maids one phone card a month(free) until their loan is paid up. After that they buy their own phone cards.

You mean normal Singtel phone card for the public phone?

            Hi Anna Ng,

I just go to those shops (little india, chinatown and I think even provision shops) selling phone cards to get (phoenix, whatever brand) - they are marginally cheaper than 7-11 (yes, I do try to save my maid's money also). They can yak for hours on a $10 face value card.

There should be a toll free number to call, and then maid will have to key in her home phone/mobile number. So she can actually call from your home, and without you paying for local phone charges.

I used to buy Phoenix card for my maids…some places sell it at $8 instead of $10 and can be used anytime of the day - no peak/off peak thing. According to my maid, Singtel doesn’t give exactly 30 min (Indonesia) and more expensive.

That's great. Treat her firmly, but fairly. It's good that she's given nap times since she has to wake up at night. But do let her know that nap is only when she got night duties. So long as she zi dong, I think generally employers also quite zi dong.

                Good luck going forward!

Maids have selective hearing. When you tell them to do something, they then bathe and get ready to go out without having to repeat.

My kids sleep in the same room as me as I wanted the maids to have a full 8 hours rest, esp when my gal was just a bb. As such, there should be no reason why they require a nap. Frankly speaking, maids are given too many rights now. Are they here to work or enjoy life ?

My current maid (based in my mum's house) secretly took naps but was found out by my son. Since then we've told her to stop becos she gets to go to bed at 8-9pm, if still take nap, a bit the oversleep.

If don't have to wake up at night to feed baby, basically just do housework, why is a nap still needed ? For my maid, she doesn't need to mop everyday...even my neighbour told me get her to mop daily. I tell my maid to wash car when it's not hot...can understand how tiring it is under the sun.
