Totally agree with caroline. Kids are kids, If they can practise diligently without parents help, all will be child prodigies. But how many can do that?


Parents really need to help. No just paying fees only.

It is difficult to play both hands concurrently as the child is still young. That's y i start that after they learn 2 notes for both hands. Just to train them from the start and not starting them after they are used to playing with 5 notes on one hand.

It takes a lot of practise, it also applies for hands fixed in one position. A lot of children lean their hand on the ledge of the piano board so that their hands do not wander around. However i do not recommend that. I rather their hands wander around first then to lean it there as it will be more difficult to change this bad habit in future.

It takes time for them to understand that they do not have to lift up their fingers high and to stay put at one position as they are still young. Do it slowly.

Moreover she in learning in a group. It is not easy for the teacher to focus on her alone that is why parents need to help.

Spend a bit more time and you will never regret it. Use incentives and bribery. It really helps in the beginning. By then she is used to practising everyday with the good habits nurtured

Hi,

My boy is currently taking piano lesson and will be sitting for G1 exam coming July.
I know nuts about piano, so really can’t coach him at all.
Normally will write notes to the teacher if I can’t help him on the theory part.

Better for me to take classes as well? Is there such thing as parental course in order for us to coach the small ones?
Or any suggestions?

There isn’t any parental course. It is just that children with parents possessing piano qualifications will have an added advantage. But if you really really want to coach in theory, ossia’s theory class is a separate class from practical class.

Thanks for the advice. Guess the problem also lies in me. I’m also finding it difficult with so many piano terms and also dont understand why c note can use the little finger and also use the thumb for bass clef…I expect her to keep up and be motivated but I also dont know how to motivate her.

Will try to encourage her to practice more and play some nice piano music for her. Maybe I need the lesson more…

As one progresses up to G4, left hand can move up to treble clef. It is not uncommon. So don’t have a rigid mind that left hand thumb plays middle C only.

About fingering (which finger plays which note), it depends on what are the notes & pieces. It is not fixed on a single note.

Piano exam (exam body either ABRASM or Trinity) is Grade 1 (G1) to G8, both practical & theory.

Hi, Has anyone heard of this music school called Music for young children http://www.mycsingapore.com.sg/myc%20program.htm Their program introduce music composition for their students even for 3-4 yrs old kid, seem interesting, wonder at such young age, can they really compose music?
