Hi Everyone! Just join today. Like any worried parent, my husband n myself don’t quite know how to accept the yet-to-be-confirmed investigation by KKH that our youngest child have shown signs of autism.Just submitted some forms for further Special Parent/Child Coaching, therapy, psychologist assessment etc.


He just turned 2yrs old and knows less than 5 words.Don’t always respond when we tell him: Come here! or Go there! etc. He prefers to speak his own language and shouts sometimes for attention. Able to focus on Barney kiddy cd, Baby Bright cd, n some favrite childrens’ programme.

My husband says son may follow him in slowness of speech at similar age. Of course those days,30yrs back, where have all these advanced child development checkup, therapy etc.

Hope to get more clearer picture(besides surfing websites) n meaningful advice from experienced member-parents of austistic children.

Have a friend whose son was diagnosed with mild autism... He didnt speak a proper word till he was maybe 4-5yrs of age... Then all of a sudden, it was like his \"throat\" opened up and words just came gushing out! He is an avid reader too... And yes he wouldnt stop talking now

Not too long ago, was told that another friend's nephew is mildly autistic, I was surprised as he has completed his national service and looks, behaves like any normal kid just more quiet but nevertheless still very bright.

Depending on the degree of the autism, I should think that your son can be trained to assimilate into society. Many are in fact normal or bright mentally but that it tends to affect their social skills.

I am basing on my observation of the people I know that has this condition. If the investigation is confirmed to be true, it may not be as easy as bringing up your older kids, but with love and patience... I believe you would be able to surmount this

Thanks ZacK for your comforting friends’ experience. My husband n myself have also heard such unusual ‘mild autism’ incidents. Perhaps its best that we continue with daily ‘intervention training’ n hope our child will have a quick recovery to a normal development level!

I recalled a program I saw very long time ago on autism, autistic kids need to have routines as they need to be in an environment that they are familiar with, they cannot manage change well and will be lost and confused when their routines are broken.

I suppose the daily intervention trainings are repetitive trainings to develop the routines in their lives?

For me I always believe that certain things happen in our lives for a reason and they are mainly there to strengthen us... Whatever the situation you are in, look for reasons to be happy and to enjoy the experience

Dun remember KKH specialist zoom in on this term. Perhaps she was concentrating on our answers to her long list of child development assessment questions that the good doctor forgot about our overwhelming worries!

I noticed also the helpful advert on autism causes n medical care on KSP forum page. Very interesting facts n statistics.

I do not think there will be anyone who can comfort you on this tense
waiting period (for the results). It's causes so much anxiety, it's hard
to concentrate on the regular stuff. One can always seem fine on the
outside... but only God will truly understand the inside.. Our prayers
are with you and your child, HealthfoodMum.

Were you referred to KKH after a recent Developmental Assessment
done by your GP or the polyclinic?

If yes, they are just doing their job and this is follow up on the child's
development, to exclude autism as a clinical conclusion for your child.
The forms are mainly general checklist. An indicator/guide, from this
input (from parents) the doctor can make general assessments prior
to the follow up appointment.

Regardless of what the results are going to be like, do speak to your
child at eye-level... a nudge and a gesture also helps attract attention
prior to speaking to the child or delivering any instruction. Encourage
eye-contact when speaking to the child. Yes, ZacK is right about the
routines part. As for now, KKH is coming in to provide early intervention
which can be a good thing... Some autism cases are unnoticed and
children receive proper care much later. Time is a detrimental factor
in intervention. The earlier the intervention is done, the more help the
child can get from medical specialist and attention from the immediate
family. Autistic children (most) look and behave as normal as a normal
person can be hence it is sometimes overlooked and children can be
mistaken for a child having ADHD.

Slowness of speech is quite common especially for boys. My 2nd girl
started speaking coherently only at almost 3 years old. Yes, i suppose
sometimes, we're too advanced for our own good..

I am no guru unlike our KSGrandmaster LOL kekeke ... My views are not validated but just some personal experiences that I have gone thru. I am sure parents here would be more than willing to share their personal encounters if they are in similar situations

Funny that was the take away pt that I remembered from the tv program many many yrs ago... I used to be quite addicted to medical documentaries when I was young ... Sadly do not have the aptitude to make it to med school :roll:

Ya, you decide how much you wanna loosen up and how much fun you
wanna have here! It's going to be a challenging journey for you for sure
if it is confirmed. But if it is not, then it's a blessing.. It's not easy to care
for normal children as it is and provide a wholesome lifestyle for them...
so what more for a special child... You're welcome to come here and chat
as and when, HFM.

Btw, if you wish to let your child pick up more words for now, you can
show him word cards or flash cards... then say out the word. Language
is usually one of the main factors to help a special child with, in the hope
that with language ability, it will be easier for parents or caregivers and
also for teachers to understand and cater to their needs even more
efficiently. Children with mild autism have better chance of overcoming
the language challenge as compared to children with higher range of
autism.
