Yup. when I have the time and mood, I try to read ahead and put in hypy of the words I dunno.hquek:
Been shopping at dangdang and gotten loads - many translated from european, japanese and even korean. the quality of reads are sooooo much better than the ones we can find locally, plus the prices are soooo cheap compared with locally published ones (sorry, but I have to think of my wallet first).
I bought from dang dang too but some words are really too 'chim' for me. What do u do when u cant read the words? Dictionary? -
SAHM_TAN:
My kids automatically tune off when there are no english subtitles and esp if the show is not interesting. So no. No chinese educational dvds for me - it's just a waste of money.
So u are more into books then to use Chinese educational DVDs?
For books, I read with them and explain what they don't know. I much prefer books than cds. But that's my case. -
SAP means they are niche in enhancing chinese culture leh....how can be not chinese? I understand is that sap schools offer higher chinese - this cannot run.
Am afraid of the 'too chinese' standard too actually...bought the whole series of si wu kuai du also but have not started.hehe
Btw, are all sap schs such as Tao nan, Pei Chun, Pei Hwa Pres all like dat, very chinese?
As for academic standards, there is definitely a lot of zzzz (ie no information) from the school. I tried asking a teacher once but she only gave very vague answers. I already all prepared to pull up my son's socks through own efforts.

at one of the P5 camp pv, i saw one student litter a piece of paper and the teacher did not allow him to do the โflying foxโ activity. Flying fox was one of the students favourite so that is a harsh punishment.
Then at the chinese calligraphy class, one naughty pri 2 boy kept talking and anyhow wrote the words. He was told to stand behind the class for half the lesson. The teachers are rather strict with the students, should be similar to most schools.
As for the students communication, the pri 1 are still chit chatting in english but the older kids in more mandarin than english. -

Hope the school does not stop students from communicating in English. When I was in P1 my P did not allow us to speak mandarin outside 2nd lang lessons.

I actually spoke to a HOD before and did raise this to her and she agreed that most HW students converse in mandarin and she added that they are actually trying to do something abt it as to make them speak more English.

Anyway, I would like to see them convert my kid from English speaking to Chinese speaking. that will be fun to watch.

During my trip with the kids, they were supposed to write answers on a worksheet. Iโm not sure what the class I was attached to is like (whether they are from the โbetterโ/โworseโ class), but honestly, I was dismayed at their lack of spelling ability - some simple words they had no clue (canโt recall the exact word). This is NOT representative of the whole school.
