Hope this article from the site helps, there are comments from other parents as well.

My kids do not go for abacus or other classes because they have 4 hrs of kiddy class per day. I don't want to load them too much now. Plus with the new baby it's hard to get around and I'm adjusting to the new routine of a 3kids household. So for the next 6 months I put things on hold so as not to stress ourselves too much and in the end the kids will not learn anything. -
hi nissin,
In the past, I always wondered if I should put my kids in abacus/mental arithmetic. But this kept getting shelved in view of positive and negative comments. So finally I didn’t do it. Depends on your priority and what you view important.
FYI: DS1 is going for music, swimming, tennis in addition to some other classes - I think that’s a lot so held back on abacus. -
Any parents going for the P6 Little india trip in october?

I think it depends on what you want out of it. You have to be clear what the purpose of learning abacus is for your child.

Anyway, just to share. I used to try to teach DS1 maths - that time he was still young and I vomitted a lot of blood trying to explain some concepts (addition more than 10). I came to the realization that I should not do it becos I don't know how to explain properly in a way he can understand, and also it's really spoiling our relationship. Since then, I've only concentrated on reading to him (Chinese and English); and we've both lived happily ever since.
Somehow he's managed to learn what he needs to from school and there has been no need for me to coach him in maths. I gave him assessment books to practise and he's generally able to do it. some careless mistakes, but that's ok. I kinda hope and feel that becos of his grounding in english, he's able to comprehend what the maths question wants and therefore arrive at the answer.
I know I can't teach him; but I'm sure there are parents out there who can.

I received letter for the orientation day. Would like to check with parents with existing kids:
1. school uniform only available from the school? No external vendors?
I'm a bit hesitant about having to go there and queue on the actual day. Was wondering if can buy from outside. I called the vendor listed on the school website but was told they are no longer selling.
2. books - those optional books. must buy? I cannot understand why schools must have optional stuff (dictionary items, the arts textbook). Why so wishy washy? Gosh... :stupid:
Thanks for all advice. -

I got it after OD. The queue was and will be long on that day. Just take note the colour of your child's house when you buy the uniform. I got the dictionary as my dd has to use it in class.
