Ladies who have outstanding success now are from CHIJ TP Secondary from the good old days. The teachers then are really dedicated...I'm still wondering if the teachers there are still as dedicated...hmmm. 😐

Prof Paulin Tay Straughan is a former student of CHIJ Victoria/TP Secondary. It's a bonus if outstanding ladies/Nominated MPs are former IJ TP students but definitely we don't need to read more articles/info about IJ girls in the news for spouting vulgar or peddling drugs.
Agree - in the past, there were dedicated teachers and students were generally better behaved. But bear in mind that it is not how well they do that matters as long as they try their best in whatever they set their hearts on! My concern lies with the fact that the school is not doing its best to teach the students well from an academic and moral standpoint.

My ex neighbour's daughter was from CHIJ Pri..and she moved on to CHIJ Sec despite outstanding PSLE results as she loved to play handbells. She continued to do well for her 'O level' and got a place in VJ. She is very disciplined, confident and well behaved girl. Hence, there are definitely good and bad sheep. Though sch environment plays an important part in shaping the values and behaviors of the girls, their characters and family upbringing are also critical.

Having said that, I doubt I will send my girls to the secondary school after completing their PSLE, cos good sheep are rare.
IF my daughter does very well in her PSLE, I would want her to go to a better secondary school...how many good sheep do you hear about ? But I must say your ex-neighbour did a good job keeping her daughter on the ground.

I thnk nowadays society changes and so do our teenagers. Nowadays kids are too good life and it cannot be compared to our times...

As mentioned before, we as parents have to try our best to instill value to our kids. We cannot totally depend on school only (though I am still trying my best on this). So even elite school will have things happening.

I happened to see that there was a CHIJ TP girl in the top O-level student list last year. Hope to see more in the future 🙏.

Nowadays teachers also have their own stress.... Every school do have dedicated and non-dedicated teachers. I think education system here are too stressing on result that value teaching may be neglected...

It really depend on individual student to buck up herself and we as parents to guide them too...In the world there is no perfect school, perfect teachers, kids or parents....
Hi there,

Any parents here who have daughters in CHIJ Toa Payoh Secondary? Appreciate if you can share the experiences/feedback here. Thanks a lot!

Cheers!

Hi there! It may be too late for you but for the benefit of others out there, please let me tell you about CHIJ TP Sec. If you have another choice, please do not choose this school. The CHIJ TP Primary school is alright but the Sec school is extremely frightful. Let me elaborate:
Teachers - Majority of them do not know what they are teaching. Case in point, there is a physics teacher - HOD of Physics who is quite clueless so most of the students will need to attend tuition to right the wrongs that she has imparted to the students. Quite a number of them are all talk but no action. There is a Chem and Add Maths teacher that are a cut above the rest - a rare find. The better teachers usually leave or get transferred out. I could go on but i am sure that you get the picture.
School environment - Not conducive. There was a case of vandalism where the students actually came back in the night to vandalise the statues and school property! Mind you this is an all girls school! Action taken - none just tell them not to do it again! In the real world, vandals, such as Michael Fay for example are caned and incarcerated!
The students can also be seen in toa payoh/orchard/libraries in their school uniform parading with their boyfriends!
Educational Standard - Low as majority of the students are those who could not make it to other Sec schools so they are fed into the school. If you are a high achiever, you will not be challenged in terms of curriculum and teachers!
Mission School - I seriously doubt the missionary/religious element here as it is a hotbed for favoritism, backstabbing amongst staff and students alike.

Hi Quintessential Mum, thank you for sharing this piece of information. It came to me as a rude shock. I was seeking for comments then when my daughter was applying for DSA to the school. May I ask if such incidents are ongoing ones? Are you having your child in this school?

Thank you! Cheers!
Quintessential Mum, is your DD in this school then? If yes, did you feedback all your views to the teachers? I am sure they will have some advice?

As an old girl, I chose to register my daughter in the same school I proudly graduated from…furthermore, with affiliation to secondary, all the more so with education standard getting more difficult.

Parents can do their level best to guide children but the kids must also want to work hard and strive to get better results at P6 even though they can get into the affiliated sec.

I have 2 daughters in this school now, sec 1 and sec 4, both from the primary section too. I must admit what is said about the quality of principal and teachers are true. But then again, the quality of teachers, and their lack of commitment, is quite the norm in most schools. I have 2 teachers and 1 principal in the family, I know.

Academic wise, the school practices ‘teach less, learn more’. Their reason, so that they produce independent, proactive learners, who will be able to do well in their lives. I personally do not agree with this method, because my dds are not high achievers, and they need the teachers guidance. My dd1 was extremely stressed when she was in lower sec trying to figure out what the teachers wanted. My dd2 is now undergoing the same stress. But by sec 3, they should be able to adapt to this method of teaching.

I believe the school stresses on character building, in their subtle way. This is more obvious in the primary school. Most, if not all, of my dds’ friends are quite well behaved. They seldom go out, and when they do, they most probably will end up in the library. They have their hair all neatly tied up, with fringe clipped up. They wear their belts properly and talk sensibly. Because they all already knew most of the students in the cohort in primary school, they are very comfortable whichever class they are assigned to, and they can be quite loyal too!

As for the vandalism case this year, the police were called in to investigate. No one, not even the teachers, know who did it. The principal kept very quiet about it. Our guess is, the case has gone to higher level, no point announcing who the culprit is. Rumour has it that a student let in some outsiders in the night to vandalize the place.

I asked my dd1 this morning whether expletives and 4 letter words are common In the school. She replied that it’s not common, but the ‘normal’ stream students do use them sometimes. I am a sahm, and I ferry my kids to school. Sometimes I also see students with hair let down, or screaming and shouting, or those without belt or wear at hip level. But there are always such students in any school. As long as you as a parent is communicating well with your dds, and their values are strong, they should be alright. Sometimes I feel that it’s good for them to be exposed to other characteristics, so that they can learn right from wrong. The girls in pure science classes are veery good. And some of the combined science girls are well behaved and hardworking too. Of course there are some black sheep in every school. I was told some students from a combined science
class managed to oust a teacher from the school. It was made into such a big issue that the teacher left. Quite sad.

This school took in most of their primary school students, even those with low psle scores, and can still manage to be in band 3, this is very good. That means the school is adding value to the students academically. Even though I have my fair share of grouses, I still put dd2 in, because I find their character building good. I’ve seen friends whose children were very clever with high scores, but change when they go to sec school. A relative started caning his dd who went to Cedar Girls cos she changed totally. And we’re talking about a girls school.

And finally, we were told by the primary school’s ex principal that the affiliation to the sec school is a privilege, not a given, and it will be removed in the near future.

Yes, character and values are most important. Beyond academic excellence, a school must focus on holistic education. I feel that this is where mission schools have an edge.

Hi momof4,

Thanks for giving us more insight about the secondary school.
I sure hope the removal of the affiliation to the secondary school will not be removed…bcos the affiliation is the other reason we chose CHIJ for my daughter.
If this affiliation is removed, won’t that mean all the other CHIJ primary schools will also lose their affiliation as well ?

Just happent to read an article from a Scientist who thanks CHIJ. I believe every school have good and bad students even from top school. See recent news from ACJC and ACS.... Most important is how we teach our value to our kids esp when they are young and guide them not to be easily influenced by surrounding.
Just read in another thread about the sex video case about two girls from ACJC that they are rumours that they are from CHIJ TP Sec.....

I have also seen the IJ TP sec girls at the bus stop after school and had a bad impression then, but we still registered my girl for pri 1 next girl as I thought it will fit us well in terms of religion as well as her interest, art....will really have to guide her closely as she grows....

I've heard of gay relationships in the school when I was in Sec 3. It's shocking to hear that.

We registered daughter in CHIJ TP bcos of the emphasis on holistic education...certainly hope we didn't make the wrong choice of registering her there..my son is in a co-ed school. I had a hard time making this decision...of giving up Phase 1. 😢
