Thanks for your help. -
For Q1, it should be 3). When the subject is separated from the verb by words such as together, along with, as well as, besides, or not, ignore these expressions when determining whether to use a singular or plural verb.
For Q2, it should be 1). When "I" is one of the two subjects connected by either/or or neither/nor, it should be put as the second subject and follow with the singular verb am.
For Q3, collective nouns can be singular or plural, but because in this context, the sentence starts with a singular determiner "a", therefore it should follow with a singular verb/pronoun.
Hope this helps! -
mommyNg:
Thanks. Was trying to figure out why the answer for Q2 uses 'am'. As for Q3, I read somewhere that the answer should be singular if the group is doing the same thing like as 'A group of boys IS eating at the canteen'.For Q1, it should be 3). I read up on Subject-verb agreement to understand how this question is to be answered.
John, together with his parents ,_____ at the concert last night.
1) is
2) are
3) was
4) were
Simply put, the answer is was…ignore ‘together with his parents’. This question is very tricky. More questions like these when my son goes to P5. Saw something called ‘gerund’ in a textbook for P5. Worry about that later. -

for such questions, identify the main sentence and \"ignore\" the rest. The verb should then be easier to find. Hope this helps.janet_lee88:
