Glad to find this post. My dd used to attend Tien Hsia’s HMT in Primary. She stopped in Sec1 but result is not good. She need help in tuition in Sec 2. Anyone can recommend a school good in HMT enrichment for Sec level? Berries seemed popular but is it good for Sec level?

Their Chinese standard is really very high. My gal has been constantly scoring almost full marks when attempting the other top school papers or in her enrichment centre but when doing her mock school exam last week, scored a terribly border-line mark 😢

:!: I heard Poi Ching order Chinese materials from China. Didn't use the standard MOE textbooks

My boy is in Poi Ching P1 this year and maybe I can share what I know on its P1 higher chinese. Poi Ching uses their own chinese textbooks(only can buy from PC school). The text book is developed jointly by PC teachers and some China school teachers. It uses 儿歌式韵语识字. In P1, they also uses MOE recommended Higher Chinese textbook to learn HanYuPinYin during term 1. Thereafter they uses their own textbooks(1a & 1b). Each chapter is like a rhyme. After every few chapters, there will be a list of 60+ - 90+ words extracted from previous chapters. Students are required to know/recognise all these words(parents have to go through the list and indicates how many words students recognise and signed back) and every week or every other weeks, there will be a MCQ test(around 60+ to 100 questions, 4 answers to choose from) on this.

Students are expected to recognise around 2000 words by end of Pri 2.

Their syllabus is indeed more difficult as compared to MOE.

My son is with YuQuan for 2 yrs(K2 & P1) and copes well in PCS as his foundation is quite good. I think most importantly is the teacher and student chemistry. His current YQ teacher is able to sustain his interest in chinese and thus his result is satisfactory. However YQ's teacher turnover is high. He is with his 4th teachers in his 2 yrs there. I am also looking around for a new enrichment center for him knowing this teacher will not stay long. So whichever enrichment center we choose, teacher play a great part. We just have to keep searching for one most suited to our child needs.[/quote]

Is your child still with Yuquan P1? WHich branch did you go to?

DD used to attend the branch at Suntec City. I find the teacher and staff responsible and good. They are flexible in terms of arranging replacement classes and give feedback to parents almost after every lesson…maybe because dd’s class size was small then. Also the teacher tried to introduce extra worksheets when she realise that dd can cope with the given worksheets. Classrooms were clean and brightly lit. Hope this helps.

Like to do a poll why do you send your child to enrichment class?

My son will be going to P1 next year. He speaks Mandarin well but can’t really read Chinese character. Uses han yu pin yin to help since he learnt it. He prefers to watch English programme and read books in English. I am worried he loses interest in Chinese
