Hmm... it's possible for HCL. My ds & his classmates were so resigned to doing badly - most did \"ming ti\", after their tr told them they need to hv written in another way. Thankfully their papers were marked by 2 teachers as is the standard practice, and i think most did reasonably.

Does the child have to memorize some answers ?[/quote]They are taught how to approach and plan their essays, and yes, they are taught to memorise many good phrases, openings, endings, etc. Quite a creativity-killer, huh?

My son was also taught to memorize openings, conclusions, 好词好句, throw in 成语…but during the exams, doubt he can remember to use any.

I guess - practise? My elder son who didn't do HCL also was just about made to practically memorise his whole textbook and more, bc they had \"mo xie\" several times a week. Until when he went for his Oral exam, I think he sounded much like an oral handbook!!!!!!!!! I think one of the examiners was laughing at him(how rude - but then again, they can't mark him down). My elder boy is generally poor in Chinese so we didn't allow him to take HCL. To this day (he's in sec 1), the moment he opens his mouth, he speaks chinese like an \"ang mo\" although his reading/comprehension is quite ok.

My elder son was in a class that is for those poor in Chinese in p5 & p6. In p6, they were given a teacher that simply drilled & drilled & drilled and kept them back as punishment to drill some more if they didn't complete their work or performed poorly in their tests/assignments. Hence the drilling set in.

No other way to make them improve but the \"old school\" way is this teacher's method. It worked for my elder boy, but I doubt my younger one can tolerate this type of \"practice\". But then again, for my younger boy, chinese is one of his better subjects. Not sure how the genes split in that way. We are an English-speaking family!

Eh, this particular \"old-school\" teacher was specially assigned by the school to that class . Retired teacher, so really \"old-school\". But must admire her dedication. She would spend time to stay back with the students that she \"punishes with retention\", and she has extra supplementary classes 2x/week plus SATURDAYS!!!!! She takes the time to come back on saturdays just to teach for 4 hours.

Yeah, I couldn't speak chinese with my kids since dh doesn't know Chinese.

Hi phankao,

If I have to speak to my kids in Mandarin, it would be a torture for me...bcos subconsciously I have to tell myself to do so. Hubby speaks Chinese to daughter, but she will reply him in English. She does the same thing to the CL tutor.
