My child will be starting at OLGC next year. We received a letter last week informing us of the various activities prior to the Saturday orientation in Nov. The letter was quite informative and spelled out everything that needed to be done as well as stating the agenda for the orientation.

From the looks of this, the administration for new P1 students seem pretty efficient and well organized.

One thing I noticed was this bit about the Dental Treatment Consent form. Any idea what this is all about? If a kid drops a tooth, they’ll help stem the bleeding etc? Or is this more about regular oral treatments? We visit the dentist twice a year so unless there is a good reason for dental treatment at the school, I’d prefer to opt out. (I have a childhood phobia of dentists that persist to this day! Likely due to some trauma I suffered at the hands of a dentist or school nurse!).

          Cheers!

good to hear some replies on this thread. Do keep us posted as time progress. this is one school that i’m really keen to enrol my child, though it may be some years to come.

any idea if there’s a open house day for visitors to drop by and have a look-see?

in my opinion, if your family see a regular dentist, i will opt out of the school dental program. relief your child the chills/fear when names being called out and the long walk to the dental room!

They usually have an Open Day in July just before P1 registration starts

If there’s not much traffic in this forum, does it mean the parents of OLGC students just aren’t kiasu enough? 🙂 Isn’t that a good thing? (but why am I here?)

Anyway, reading the dental consent form in detail reveals that they guarantee at least 1 supervisor (aka "real qualified dentist") but the person actually treating your child could very well be a trainee (aka "dentist wannabe" or "lao-kun-kia" in my Mom’s language). My wife and I decided to pass on this since we have a regular dentist whom are girls are familiar and comfortable with.

As for the open house, @nms1 is right in saying they did have an open house before the P1 registration period. We skipped it because we’d already visited the place during a fund-raising carnival this year.

The orientation is scheduled for 13 Nov and we’re supposed to leave our kids with their form teacher for an hour or so. During the pre-orientation activity, a teacher took our daughter to one side, conversed with her one-on-one and got her to read some words (high-frequency words I guess) and sentences. My speculation is that, based on this short conversation, the kids are placed in different classes depending on their ability to read. A bit disconcerting to find this kind of "minor" streaming at this level, no?

just based on speaking and they stream? kinda unfair but again, its only primary 1 and maybe the teachers want to ensure the get the kids of the same wave-length together. however, what if the kid that particular day don’t wish to communicate? why you ask them the reason for such "streaming"?

                    Hi @dfstan,

Well, I did say I was just \"speculating\"... that said, there must be some kind of purpose to the conversation and that seemed to be a plausible reason.

                    Cheers

                      Hihi..

My girl is currently in P1, OLGC. Thanks to d low birthrate in '03, we managed a slot for her w/o having to ballot. 🙏

I must say that she is very comfortable in school, teachers r supportive towards child's learning needs & school is very ON. U'll get newsletters, e-mails & smses fm form teachers to notify parents on urgent matters like test dates, events, etc.

                      :celebrate:
