How to tell if a child is gifted?
-
Correct me if im wrong, being smart and intelligent is different from gifted?? :?
-
I cut and paste the following:
There are many reasons to find out if the child is gifted
Many parents feel that there is little practical value to get their 'potential' gifted child tested. But there are potential risks with putting off the testing, these include:
1. Knowing the pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses that
can help parents to plan the best learning experience.
2. Waiting till the school tests the child can risk a ceiling effect on the tests, one that gets more pronounced each and every year.
3. Many gifted students often appear to be troublemakers and often challenge authority figures by questioning classroom rules. The behavior of a gifted child is sometimes confused with attention disorders such as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Hence, the test would identify between a gifted child and a possible learning disorders kid such as ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, and other problems as early as possible. Did you know that Asperger's children have some of the characteristics of autism but at the same time many Asperger's children are intelligent and insightful too?
4. Children who are gifted are more comfortable with children and classes that deal with them at their own level. Research has shown that gifted students thrive when placed with students of similar ability. In the wrong learning setting, giftedness can be as paralyzing as a learning handicap. Unfortunately, these gifted children are terrible introverts, misunderstood by peers and parents, with their undiscovered exceptionality leading to a dead end. Bored and unchallenged at school, they may drop out and choose a direction that will never make use of their exceptional abilities.
Hope it is helpful.

Hello all ,
I am so glad to find an active thread on giftedness here. My DS took the SB V. I wonder if anybody’s child took this test, too? -
Hie yellowbelt
Do u know of anywhere which I could bring my son for IQ tests ?
Does anyone has any recommendations ?
What will be the \"consequences\" after the test ? How does it affect their schooling life ?
Seriously, I'm abt at the desperate dead end ! And struggling to \" keep alive \" our situation.
Just yesterday, my dear son said he wanna join student care cause some of his friends are there. With the idea that he could play play play with them, then mummy come fetch him home in evening to eat home cooked food ! ( he prefers to eat in then out )
I believed that he's really doing all these not for my attention, but cause he's really bored at school, looking for something interesting to do. :stupid: -
joylly:
Your boy is already in P1? In that case you might want to check with principal?Hie everyone I desperately need HELP and glimpses of answer here ...
We seriously need help !
Should I bring him for IQ test ? If so, where ? Then what will happens next ?
cry:
My dd IQ test was done in school, initiated by school to identify learning pattern or something like that, can't remember exactly what they told me. Didn't occur to me to send her for IQ test before. Since it's free, I just let her go loh
As to what happen next.... er, nothing happens. Still in same class, doing same thing eh. We were given a one page report with raw data, I also don't know how to interpret. If tested externally, I suppose there should be detailed write up and recommendations
By the way, I read at another forum a boy similarly tested in school was asked to skip level. Wow! -

there can be overlaps, but apparently there is a difference. This is probably an oversimplification, but it's in the way they analyse information. Our GEP classes are not geared towards all gifted children, but a straddling between gifted and high achievers. So even if your child is privately tested to be gifted, MOE will not accept the test results. They have their own criteria and will conduct their own testing if they decide to.
Gifted is also not the same as being a high achiever. If I'm not wrong, there was a study once on the jobs taken by various gifted individuals and one of the high IQ fellow was a truck driver.
Hence the importance of instilling resilience, EQ, good value and work ethics.
There was an interesting table on the differences between gifted, high achiever, and creative. If I can find it I'll put it here. Some of the points made me chuckle!

Agree with sleepy. Ask the school to arrange for one, since the teachers too found him bright. Moe has the best resources andif there be any action required, they'll follow up from there. Alternatively, go call any clinic or hospital for a referral to a psychologist.
If he is bored, bring him to the zoo, hv him read up about the animals and draw them. Take photos and arrange into a beautiful sketch book.
Publish a nice book jointly with him. Start a blog, create a cartoon character and write stories around the character. Buy a good camera and capture the birds in action, do research on Singapore birds. Go visit the war memorials and read up on Hitler and his secret forces. Play ww2 games at home. Go to China town and drink tea, talk about the cultures one at a time. I would also bring my kids to Mrs Lee's wake and point out how as girls she's a perfect role model.
Go play basketball in the neighbourhood, catch some earthworms and talk about their contributions to us. Look at the haze and read newspapers about its cause and effects.
If he is bored in school, he doesn't hv to be bored elsewhere. And if my kid is bored in school, I'll make sure he has fun at home. And, I'll remind them that it is good to be bored once in a while. For, it is only when you have nothing to do and allowed to be bored that creative ideas come about.
That's why, the professors in the universities have few classes and does research and thinking most of the time. It is during these thinking and boring times that great discoveries are made! I know that for a fact.

haha, I found it. I LOVE their description of the quirky creative child. Take it as a casual reference, and remember children are more complex than charts.

I find this one so funny:
A high achiever...performs at the top of the group.
A gifted learner ... is beyond the group.
A creative learner ... is in own group. :rotflmao:
or this one:
HA...needs 6 to 8 repetitions for mastery
GL...needs 1to 3 repetitions
CL...questions the need for mastery. LOL -

[/quote]alamak, why is moe so cheapskate? Since they already did the testing why didn't they just include the intepretation which I'm sure the psychologist provided for the authorities. -

Or maybe 2ppaamm should write a KSP blog on what to do when your child is bored.
