Usually for kids below the age of 3, I think a home catered party would be the most practical (read easy on the pocket) way to go. But I make sure that if I opt for home catering to make it less boring, I'll get an interesting cake or dessert. For example, for my child's first month I got agar eggs instead of the more traditional red eggs from Cooked With Love (http://www.cwlevents.blogspot.com)

They also do gorgeous looking agar dolls which you can get for a little girl's birthday. Plus agar agar has always been a hit with the elderly relatives.

Aranda Country Club is not a bad choice. The room is v spacious. Oso near to Explorer Kid, Wild Wild Wet, Theme Park etc.

Thanks Evelyn. I'm thinking of ordering the Thomas cake for him. It's gonna be a big party! Also thinking of buying a pinata.
