You have the correct answer.\"Why was Willy happy to hear the jingling sound of keys?\"
\"jingling sound of keys\" indicates Willy's parents are back home, thus he is happy.
My DD just answered \"The jingling sound was familiar\".
I do not know how to answer this either. As this passage talked so many sounds, how can you tell this jingling sound is from his parents? Could not be someone else trying to break into the house?
Is Willy too rush to go to open the door? -
\"The familiar sound of jingling keys, unlocking the front door, woke Willy.\"
familiar is the key word - the sound of the jingling keys is familiar to Willy, he must have heard this sound many many times, probably from his parent bunch of keys...
If it is someone else trying to break into the house - the sound of \"break into the house\" will not be familiar to Willy.
This is just my 2 cents... Hope it helps... -
atutor2001:
Many misunderstood that the use of simple past tense is limited to a past action. The more subtle meaning of simple past tense is that \"what is said is no longer true.\" For example...

[Original Title: P2 English]
Can anyone help with this:
Rearrange the following words into a sentence.
\"he missed because he late was the bus\"
Answer 1 : He missed the bus because he was late.
Answer 2 : He was late because he missed the bus.
Which answer is correct and why?
Thank you.[/i]
It can be both.
ANSWER 1
1. He was late.
(Just say he needed to take a bus to school)
2. He ran outside and found out that he missed the bus
ANSWER 2
1. He missed the bus
2. He was late (because he missed the bus)
(Even I have to admit my explaination was no help! :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: ) -
Answer 2.
He was late because he missed the bus. (This sentence explains the reason why he was late. He missed his public transport.
Answer 1 is tricky. It is only meaningful if it is phrased more specifically this way:
He missed the schoolbus because he was late.
Typically we take it that schoolbus has a designated time of arrival and the purpose of the bus being there at that time is to fetch him. There is more precision in the time.
For public transport, the time of arrival is at best estimated, never a fixed precise time as its purpose is to serve the public not to fetch a specific person. -
ksi:
Agree. Answer 1 is not acceptable under normal circumstances.Answer 2.
He was late because he missed the bus. (This sentence explains the reason why he was late. He missed his public transport.

Sentence Re-arranging.
Rearrange the following words into a sentence.
"he missed because he late was the bus"
Answer 1 : He missed the bus because he was late.
Answer 2 : He was late because he missed the bus.
Grammatically, the answer should be #2. He was late. (The reason is because he missed the bus).
If this question was tested in P3 under ‘Synthesis & Transformation’, the answer would definitely be #2. The question would be:
He missed the bus. He was late (because).
