IVF baby mix-up - TMC

There is refund for wrong sizes or colour…but there is possibly no refund for cases like this. So what humans make error, but this is something which is for a lifetime. The person who made the error has caused misery for this couple and the child.

By the way, TMC ever brought me the wrong baby for feeding. Fortunately I discovered the mixed up just before I fed the baby :x - WRONG BABY !

Yikes! And TMC handles the highest births in SG among other private hospitals right? I had my baby at Mt. Elizabeth and I remembered the nurses tagging the baby and me right inside the delivery room itself! I saw my baby and thought I could recognise him but once inside the nursery itself when I peer into the room, I thought I was looking at my baby sleeping peacefully and noticed another baby crying loudly on the other side of the room with nobody bothering. Turned out that crying baby was mine - aiyoh! When the nurse came back into the room and I asked why nobody attended to my baby crying? She said it is OK to let the baby cry, built up their lung muscles!
Mmm.....anyway, I saw the tag so cannot be wrong. Don't tell me TMC does not tag the babies???

Angelight:
Sad sad tragedy due to human error. Now I'm even more convinced I would never go for IVF, no matter how much I long for a second child.
Hi Angelight,
Actually no need to talk about IVF yet, just the \"simpler\" process of the IUI whereby one just collect the husband's sample and then the doctor do the IUI, mistakes can happen already!
From my own experience having done the IUI 4 or 5 times (all not successful), and the way the nurses from the Fertility lab ask me questions, make us sign and fill up forms etc, I realized all sorts of scenarios could have happened and the following ideas just struck me:
(1) That a woman, wanting very much to have a child, could have just collected ANYBODY's sperm samples and then go to a fertility lab and get it injected into the womb. I got this very suspicious look from the lab nurse when I turned up one day with my husband's samples and check it in while my hubby was parking the car (the doctor told me to do this so that it can save time. In fact, there is no need for my hubby to turn up!). But the fertility lab nurse ask the question where was my husband? Why didn't he come with me? etc... which leads me to this thought!
(2) That in the lab while cleaning the samples, the lab nurse could make the mistake and mix it up with somebody else. Actually this did not occur to me until I did my 3rd or 4th IUI when I switch from one doctor to another. The first doctor used a lab facility which I saw there were a lot of patients and the centre seems very busy. When I switched to Mt. E. lab, there were markedly fewer patients and the nurses were able to attend to me much better. Also noted that the samples collected seems much more volumous compared to the first lab. Perhaps in the rush to clean the samples, the first lab just took a little bit only? Dunno but it did occur to me that we should know better to go to a lab which is less busy perhaps.
(3) That we were made to sign a lot of disclaimers that should the baby turns out not perfectly normal, the couple has no right to sue the hospital / clinic. This is part & parcel of the IUI process. You never know whether the washing process damaged the sperm or not. This I only realize when I conceive my boy naturally after the failed 4-5 times of IUI, that perhaps \"all naturale\" is the best.
(4) As for IVF, although my hubby was opened to the idea, I was not. Because I told him we should not jump the gun without even trying for longer naturally and then go for the first steps IUI. I have a friend who went through the IVF and described the process to me. Sounds so tedious and painful I was really against it. But she has twins successfully so it fulfilled her goals.
Thank God for natural conception and natural births.

But u know kids sometimes change within few hours also and during labour hours u might have had just the glimpse... whereas they take the kid to bath then the kid sleep and they allow u to sleep as well... so there are chances u might not recognize ur own child .....
just kidding
But this is highly possible!

True, I didn't quite recognise mine. I only caught a brief glance of her after delivery and at that moment was still reeling from the effect of anesthetic. Had c-section.LKVM:

After I slept for don't know how many hours, the nurse brought baby to me for feeding for the very first time. Baby was nicely and tightly wrappd up. Didn't occur to us to unwrap her to check for tag. Frankly speaking, never in my wildest imagination would I expect them to bring me the wrong baby. If not for my dh's comment about how beautiful our baby looked, it wouldn't have triggered my alarm.
And yes, my baby's ankle tag did drop off. But wrist tag still intact. Nurses were plain careless :x
By the way, I am positive I brought the right baby home. She's a splitting image of her elder sister by her 2nd month -
I delivered at TMC…my baby was checked in the delivery room by the gynae personally b4 the PD came in. She was with me most of the time during the 2 nights…except the first day when nurses told me she needed to stay in the incubator to keep warm.

I actually have a very good impression of TMC till the news about IVF that caught me by surprised. Unbelievable to me as I thought, compared to natural delivery, IVF should have a more stringent control procedures.
Both my DS2 and recent DS3 were delivered there i.e. natural delivery. I don’t remember about DS2 as it was 8 years back. But for DS3 i.e. 1 yr back, I’m pretty impressed with the tagging process. The nurse went through a ‘quality’ check with me on the newborn immediately upon delivery… from head to toes, counting fingers etc. and finally tag DS3 in front of me before they delivered him to the nursery. I do have this innate fear about later wrong baby coming out from the nursery, and thus, make an effort to look for birth mark etc., follow the baby to nursery and trying to identify him from the rest… Additional precaution for me…
It will take sometime for TMC to build back its reputation… sigh -

In some Aussie hospital, apart from wrist and ankle tags, the baby's details are written on a sticky tape and taped to the back of baby, from birth. That sticky tape don't come off until the parents decide to peel it off by themselves.

Yes, the QC check on the newborn is impressive. The nurse did the test on the newborn in the delivery room. I remember seeing a piece of paper wrapped with my bb on top of the tags.I actually have a very good impression of TMC till the news about IVF that caught me by surprised. It's sad that this happened in a reputable hospital like TMC. The service is great...as good as staying in a hotel
