Hi All,
Iām new here to this forum. My daughter just got the letter. She got selected.
We are not sure about which school to choose. We live in Yishun. I believe the nearest schools are Rosyth and then Raffles.
Is anybody from Yishun who have kids stuyding in these schools. Can share your experience.
My wife is not that much willing to send daughter away to a school so far.
Thanks -

As a parent of a GEP kid, hope the sharing of my observation would help shed some light why some kids in top class do not get selected for GEP whilst those with 'so so' results get selected.blur-daddy:
Base on my understanding one year back, the top student in my DS1 P3 level didn't get selected for GEP... so the selection criteria are somewhat different and not transparent...
I wonder how they assess.
My P3 was telling me that one of her classmates was selected for 1st test. However, this child's result is so so, so they are surprised. On the other hand, the top in her class didn't make it.
I was like.... err... maybe the top in class are not gifted but they are hardworking
Firstly, the screening and selection tests only focus on English, Maths and General Ability (GA). If a P3 kid is strong in these areas, especially in the area of GA, there is a stronger likelihood to be selected for GEP.
The 'class banding' in school is based on the 3 subjects taught in P2, which includes MT. School results in these subjects are based on how well you have learned what had been taught (termed 'acquired knowledge'). GA is not tested during P2 SA2. There are potential GEP kids who are good at GA but weak in MT would thus be posted to an 'average' class.
My observation is that kids in GEP have very strong abstract reasoning abilities. They are able to 'see and observe' things/issues which most kids at the same age would not be able to. This 'advance' ability is important to 'survive' the next 3 years in GEP. The curriculum leverages a lot on this innate ability of the selected kid.
I remember that, during the GEP Parents Briefing Q&A session, one parent was still reeling with shock if MOE had made a mistake with his child getting selected for GEP. The Head of MOE GE Branch commented that the GEP Selection Tests are of very high standard and thus the kids who are selected to join the GEP are 'no fluke'.

Hi AppleCrumble,
Nice great summary...
Applicable to my DS1... He loves maths and science, but suck in MT... The other observation i wanna add is in general, they like to read books... As thats where they get all their general knowledge from... My DS1 read abt boring topics like earthquake, tsunami, grizzle bear against polar bear etc. And only in P2, did he switched over to story books... And now stuck in all kind of story books... To him, reading is relaxation!AppleCrumble:

Agree with you that these kids love to read. They have voracious appetite for books which are of interest to them, regardless of how thick the book can be. My kid can 'chew off' a book of about 3 cm thick in 2 weeks, even when school work is heavy!! :!:
But I am happy that my kid has a great love for books...

I thought so too, until I know of a kid who really loves to read and also good in Math but didn't get into GEP. I think the different is the General Ability which I don't know can be trained or not. Maybe someone can let your kid reads such books, crazy about books and good in Math and sit for the selected test. If get in, then we surely has the GEP formula :celebrate:
Thanks, blur-daddy for the compliments.blur-daddy:
