Believe when the Classes were 1st banded together in Charity, Faith, ....., Patience, Wisdom in the OLD Days -

Apparently, the CURRENT way banded kids into the top three classes (Ch, Fa, Gr) based on level positions. The remaining kids were S-banded all the way and placed in Hope to Wisdom. A parent, who has a child in Wisdom, vouched for that last evening cos her son's P1 level position last year was less than 160th, yet he was placed in Wisdom. I think we had a preconceived idea all this while that the kids were allocated classes based on level positions 1st to 360th and that since the best class is Charity, so the worst must be Wisdom. The kids thought that way too, that's why it \"shocked\" the P to know that the child was ashamed to tell her class was Patience.

Frankly, I was a little doubtful still, cos a kid I know who was in Wisdom 2 last year is really quite poor in her studies. Could she be coincidentally S-banded into that class?

My boy's P1 level position was 141/357, promoted to Hu2 (assuming CH30, FA60, GR90, HO120, HU150). P2 level position was 170+, promoted to HU3 (assuming Ch40, FA80, GR120, HO160, HU200). Seems to me the way class allocaton was done is very simple - plain ranking based on level position.

Maybe it was different approach for those starting P1 after my boy? :?

I have just checked with my GaL just Now -
She said that P1 and P2 R Randomly Placed and Not Really Reflect the Level Positions.
The ACTUAL Banding Actually Starts from P3 .....

So Guess Both of U R Right about the Kids in Wisdom2 ....

          Jennifer, Believe U R right.
Coz I know of a P6 Gal this year in the Last Class, who is very Weak in her studies.

Her Mum confirmed that - YES ALL the kids in the Class R very Weak, And Failing Almost Every Subject in Test, etc.
They DO Arrange Remedial Classes to Help Pull them Up in P6 .....
The Result? Let's See How When PSLE Results R Released this year ....

Actually under the new system, the later yrs will also be less stressful as long as one does not make it to the top 4 classes (writing it as though it's almost an aim not to be in top 4, haha). But better still if sch can totally do away with level ranking for all 6 levels. Just announce the standard deviation, mean & highest/lowest scores will do. Then I can set my boat to cruise control, invite ds on board & relac relac together. Still must study lah of course, but it's studying to the tune of relaxing classical music πŸ˜„ .
Actually, I like your idea of getting rid of the level ranking but perhaps not all level 6. The children needs to identirly at lower levels so that teachers can help them and parents need to be aware how well the children are coping. Perhaps at level 3 onwards, can just indicate the mean & highest/lowest scores within the class and cohort. When a std reaches P5 or P6, there will be an indicator to let them know what is his/her PSLE score would be like, so that they will know where they stand.

After every CA / SA, together with the Report Book - My Gal Always bring Back a Sheet of Summary Table
              - Showing Each of the Subject's Highest / Lowest / Avg Score in the Level as well as in her Class. My Gal's Score in Each of the subject is indicated in the Table as Well.
So it is Quite easy to see where she stand among her Classmates / her peers in the Same Level.

              Do U Receive this?

Thanks, E3 for the very comprehensive update!! :thankyou:

Quite a change. I think mine is more concern whether any of her gang will be in the same class as her as year. I think this is a good change. As for the weaker students, I believe the FTs in each classes can have a better focus on them, right? With all the weakest in one class, its pretty hard for FT to help everyone. For them to be evenly distributed into a few classes, first, their esteem should not be badly hit as they are not openly identify in the 'last' class, secondly, they can be motivated and learn from other classmates who are of better learning abilities and last but not least, being numbered in the class, the teachers (FT inclusive) should be able to put in more attention for them.

I'll take that first yr w/o stress anytime friend . Still preferable than streaming at end of P1.

Though no straming, the P1 students are still rank from the 1st to the 330th at the endof the year. So stress will also build up subtlely

Good idea. They could possibly do that too. Why not you show up at the dialogue session on Monday and suggest that? I am serious.

But I not even invited for dialogue session how to go?

P will tell me, 'mai kancheong, your ds not even p1 yet you got so many things to say oredi.'

But since you think it's a good idea, I'll find a way to reflect this to her. πŸ˜„

No matter where you place the 4 classes, it is very easy to tell.... unless the kid is totally bochap and happy-go-lucky type.....i mentioned before, they will compare worksheet... somehow, i believe they will get to know within weeks....parents will ask and compare too....very difficult to conceal....[/quote]Agreed. Even the most bo-chap kids also want to know. Because I was once a \"bo-chap\" kid. \"bo-chap\" doesn't mean not \"kpo\" πŸ˜‰

Seriously after thinking thru yesterday and discuss with my dw & dd, I think the P came up with a brilliant way of streaming the classes. I am totally for it except for the naming. It is just a waste of time and effort.
Some of my friend's kid who are in PH (diff classes) will compare who and who is in the top 4 classes. It is not a healthy way of competiton. The proposed method will in a way elimnated the 2/3 lower tier but to change naming so that they will not know is not going to work for the kids. They are smart.

Nan Hua top classes in place in the middle and everyone knows about it.
