Montessori Phonics - Introduction To Single Letter Sounds

lessons1- 5 which covers teaching child sounds /c/. /f/, /i/, /m/, does it mean we just do the same for /e/, /z/, /p/, /o/ follow by next set etc?

What is the reason for introducing LMA ? :?

After LMA, is it word building stage or the 3-letter word formation you mentioned earlier?
she is not tracing the sandpaper letters well yet, always anyhow do :frustrated: is it a bad time if i try to get her to hold a pencil and start writing freehand letters? :?

sidetrack a bit, i noticed that there are usually more than 1 child working on the mat in my child's school. is this acceptable? i have the perception that a child should work within a given space/work area in a montessori env, hence i'm abit disturbed by this as the teachers are not showing that this is not wrong to do. my child would tell me that so and so went over and play with her toys. she is not too happy unless its her fav friend (strange how a 3yo would already have friends she prefers) as i taught her to work within her mat and not disturb others hence she expects the others to do so.
Then she loves playing her school toys not sure what she picked and she does not like to be asked to do tablework/sit beside teacher to learn numbers/letters. she's stubborn i usually have to find a way to convince her to agree to do what i want her to. Have you come across such student/child before? How would you handle them?

I am very motivated after reading your postings and would like to start teaching phonics to my DD who is 3.5 years now. Thanks for sharing so much with all the parents here!!

I have been teaching my DD to read via the flashcard (aka shichida/Glenn Doman) method to read since very young. She can recognize most of the sight words on the dolch list and is beginning to read simple story books.(3-4 lines per page kind).

But as you know, the cons of the shichida method is that kids can only recognize words that are already taught to them.When it comes to a new word that they have never seen before, they would not be able to pronounce.

For my DD, I will be starting her with the single phonics sound as per your suggestions/lesson plan on page 1 of this topic. But My query is: For example, I want to teach her the sound of the letter "C" ==> since she already know the word "Cat", "Cap" and many three letter words by sight, should I still use these words? From my understanding from your posting, the reason for choosing a word is to get the child to try and sound out these words using phonics method right? In my case, am i right to say that i should choose some "C" letter words that she has never seen before, say, "Coupon"?? I also realise that she can pronounce many 3 letter words even though I have never taught her them before.She just seems to be able to sound out these words in her own way. What is your suggestion in my case? How should I proceed with her? I am very encouraged bu your posting and Tamarind’s posting and would want to teach my DD phonics as well too.

Also, I have never formally taught her the alphabets. She knows them from watching DVD. Should I just do a "revision" with her first as she sometimes will get confused with certain letters, say "b and d" and "m and n".

Lastly, do you think 3.5 years is too young to start and learn how to write letters? Her school teachers seem to think so and advise me just to let her doodle. She cannot hold a pencil very well yet. Was just wondering what is your views on this?

When I read a word for my ds2 to form (using those foam alphabets), e.g. trap, snap, etc., sometimes he will form the word as trep or snep. How do I correct this mistake ? Is this common because the "a" and "e" sounds quite similar.

You may try this and lemme noe if it works.


You open your mouth wider for words with the vowel /a/... and drag the
sound slightly longer. For the words with the vowel /e/... try the brief &
quick \"eh\" sound.

You're revising with spelling the blends your child already knows how to read issit?

Thanks for your advice, will try out with my DS2.
Yes, he's already reading. Taught him those blends a few months back, now doing a bit of revision to see if he can remember.

Yes, I teach him at the moment. I am doing it with the help of your postings in the forum, your advices to the parents here and also tamarind's blog. I must say a big thank you to you and tamarind.

Teaching him at home on my own requires a lot of discipline. I must say that I am still learning because you know as a SAHM of two boys, there are many distractions at home. Hopefully, he's ok with my teaching

teach our own children. But if you do it right, the satisfaction is immeasurable.
