Yes. .they are not test.. just playing with shapes and alphabets. Hong Wen has dedicated teachers e.g. LSP (Learning Support Programme) These teacher are good ally of PSG, and they are very nice and patient teachers. But i seriously hope i don't see any child to join these classes.
Thanks Lionheart, I had heard about schools conducting such activities (my son insisted on using that word as opposed to 'test'). I think this is good so that early intervention can be sought for kids that need such help.lionheart:
As Hong Wen is a neighbourhood school, please be mindful that the school still has students that has never attend Kindergarten; kids from overseas that has no grasp of Chinese and English and kids whom has learning disabilities.
The School has a fair policy for children. Through these simple test, those whom are in the above category are identified and special attention can be given to these students.
In any case, I didn't prepare DS1 for such activities - though I think it'll be good for me to know if DS needs help in any area. :celebrate: -

If the grouping of the P1 is to ensure that all pupils have the opportunities to reach a certain level of academic competency, do you know when the school will start grouping the kids into classes with good academic results, average academic results and below average academic results? -

Hong Wen do not just classify on results that directly. There is the Higher Chinese element and others. It is complicated. E.g. the best P3 student came from the 2nd Class las tyear. What's a parent class rep?
PSG promotes communication between Teacher and Parent. The Class Rep is a parent who works directly with his child 's Form Teacher so that certain issue can be addressed at 'grassroot' level. He may assist the Form Teacher in organizing class event, e.g party.. He is also part of a Level Organization that also works closely with the PSG Exco. -

Thanks for sharing. I visited other school networking groups and found that there's more homework for the best class, while the less academically inclined class has less homework. Does this happen in HW too?

To side track a bit, I've always been annoyed with MOE for pigeon hole our kids at such a young age. I have nothing against intervention for students who need more help. But I always feel that MOE decide at too early an age what a child is capable of achieving academically. I believe that a child can achieve more than he/she thinks he/she can achieve if the adult believe in him in a positive manner that enable his self-esteem to grow and at the same time challenge him academically beyond what he thinks he is capable of. Sorry for rambling on , it's just that whenever I think the way MOE mass produce and categorize students I just :stupid: -

Homeworks does not solve learning problems.
Matter of fact, it is parents that had driven the homework behavior. Every year I received feedbacks from P1 parents to request school to give more homework. i have to tell them off that it is not in our interest to keep pressuring our children, hence i became not popular among certain group of parents. i assume they bypass PSG and pressure the school and teachers.
i enjoyed working with the principal as we shared common values in Learning. Learning is a happy process and it must be a sustainable one. Probably yours are the same too. :). -

The P seems like a person not bother by results for results sake. I find that when the kids know the teacher care for them and the learning atmosphere is fun, they learn better.
For me homework only serve 3 purpose. One to reinforce the concept learn through practice, two, to find out how well the child understand the concept by varying the question, third to find out which child has trouble understand the concept at the basic level.
I've learnt the hard way with my eldest that the best policy in learning is placing relationship first before results. :celebrate:
