Think she can get into both. So follow your heart.

I know that during my daughter's year, some of the sports DSA girls came in with 210s-220s for their PSLE and struggled in their exams in Sec 1 and 2.That may be why some of the schools have this additional requirement now.

How R these DSA-Sports Girls doing currently?
Have they managed to catch up on their grades?
If Not, R the school giving them Additional Supplementary class to help them?
Or has there been more drastic Action, like request to transfer out from RGS?javascript:emoticon('')
Hear say that there are special class for DSA-Sports Students only, is it true?

erm , i am a student from RGS currently and i would like to say that the DSA students from sports have to meet a certain requirement for their PSLE to get in [ i think maybe ranging from 245 onwards ] and they ain't given extra classes. They are allocated to respective classes along with the rest of people of the same DSA item with the mainstreams. RGS do leave them alone and they're coping pretty well here šŸ˜„

hmmm. maybe you could say so for a minority of them. but certainly not for most of us , even those wealthy ones mix around with the middle-classes! but there're classes with alot of rich people and it would be a little hard to communicate there.

                1) Would like to find out more about the subjects that one has to take in year 1 and year 2 and year 3 and year 4 in Nanyang Girls.

                2) What are the examinable subjects and non examinable subjects in year 1 & 2?
                3) What are the compulsory examinable subjects to be taken in year 3 & 4?
                4) Are all students allowed to take triple science or is triple science only for top students while the rest must take only one or two pure science only?
                5) Is it exams by semester like in RGS or is there a major end of year exams with weekly tests like other secondary schools?
                6) Is it very competitive & difficult to get into dance as CCA?

Hope to obtain sonme advice on the above.

I graduated in 2008 so my information might be outdated. This is based on what it was when I was in NYGH.
                    1) Which subject do you want to know more about? I studied quite a few subjects so maybe you might want to ask a more specific question?
                    2) Examinable: Combined Science, Integrated Math, Language Arts, HCL, Combined Humanities, Third Language (if applicable)
Non Examinable: Speech & Drama, Dance, Music, Home Economics, Art, PE
                    3) Compulsory: HCL, Integrated Math, Integrated Humanities, Language Arts, Chemistry (I think)
                    4) Yes, anyone can offer triple sciences. If your grades are really bad, they might ask you to drop one science in Sec 4 but that's for very exceptional circumstances. The minimum number of compulsory science subjects is 2 (might have changed though).
                    5) Block test system (similar to JC). 1 Block Test per Term I think. Not sure about term 1, but there are definitely tests for T2 and T3. With final year examinations.
                    6) Yes. All performing arts and sports CCAs in NYGH are strictly by audition only. I suppose how difficult it would be depends how good you are as a dancer relative to other hopefuls? Which Dance CCA are you interested in, Modern Dance or Chinese Dance?

Lizawa, when I was in NYGH, only white shoes were allowed. You could wear track shoes if you could find pure white ones! šŸ˜„

                      Hi micko07,

What do you mean by combined science, combined humanities and integrated math?

I hear that if you don't score an average of B4 in your overall results, you'll be retained. Are there cases of students being retained?

Combined Science: One term per year is devoted exclusively to one of the three sciences for S1 & 2. So you might have Physics in S1T1, Chemistry in S1T2 and Biology in S1T3. A condensed version of triple sciences, if you will.

Combined Humanities: Geography + History, one hour per week. I forgot what the subject weightage is; should be 1.5, same as Language Arts and HCL.

Integrated Math: Just a cheem name for Math! Has no implication until upper Sec, whereby it is a combination of A Math and E Math, plus some simpler JC math topics. Effectively, everyone has to do double math. Weightage is 1.0 for Lower Sec, 2.0 for Upper Sec.

Yes, I know of people who were retained or asked to leave after Sec 4. That is really a rarity though (I can count them on one hand, at most two hands!); the average student gets by just fine! The teachers are very nice; they will give weaker students remedial classes if neccessary. Your fellow classmates are also very helpful, we try to help each other if possible. An MSG of 4.0 / 3.0 (ie B4) is really quite easy to achieve (I would go so far as to say we need to increase standards), unless you slack off entirely. As long as a student does her homework and studies hard, there is really little chance that you can flunk out of school. They, and Hwa Chong, make exceptions for weaker students (ie placed under probabtion, taking an easier academic workload)
