Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)
-
My daughter just finished sec one at scgs, got in under DSA and then qualified academically anyway. It was a very good year for her, made many friends. Teachers are caring. They are strict about producing fine Asian ladies as evident by their attention to even how the girls sit - even when a chair has an upright back, the girls are expected not to lean against it but to straigten their backs. I like, even though the girls may not all appreciate that all the time.
Their language arts program is really solid - they actually teach different styles of writing and students have to master the theory and apply it to the writing. Useful science project that applies what they learn by building a device that meets certain aims.
Some teachers may be still pining for the former principal who stayed many years, but the current principal is a smart lady and the school will continue to do well under her I am sure. -
Despite all the above comments about scgs, i feel that the school does not do enough to recognize the achievements of the pupils, be it past or present. For instance, i heard it from one of my friends that students there are not rewarded for their academic achievements after they have left the school for the integrated program in secondary 2. :x In this case, i feel that it is somewhat unreasonable of scgs to do so as they have actually worked hard in the school for their sec 2 year. :?

What do you mean by not rewarded for their academic achievements after they have left the school? What kind of rewards are you referring to? SC has been rewarding and recognising their past students. -
the merit award that is given to the top 20 students in the level. however, if the students leave the school before completing their 4 years of secondary education there, they would not be allowed to attend the annual prize giving ceremony in march. thus, the award which was rightly theirs would be given to another student. their position in the level for that academic year would also not be recognized in the honor board.

Worried 123 - I am an SCGS alumni and my daughter has just finished Sec 4. There is no honor board for merit award winners. The awards are given prospectively, but based retrospectively. In other words, you do well in Sec 2, you get the award for your Sec 3 year. Rather like a scholarship. Logically, why would SCGS give out a scholarship if the child is no longer in the school?
It’s a great school if you want an all rounded girl who can carry herself well in public. -
The last 2 or 3 Head Prefects of the school were not SCGS primary alumnis so don’t worry, your "outsider" girls won’t be discriminated against.

i was referring to the honor roll, which is pinned on the notice board.
in this case, it will be very unfair to the students who perform well. take for instance, should the student top her cohort in that particular year, then the award would be given to the second student in level. -

Hmmm....this is as if you are saying that when a high performing employee resigns from a company, the company should continue to pay him/her bonus and continue to label him/her as the best employee of the year. Do let us know if there are such companies or schools in Singapore that practise this and how this practice affects the morale of the existing employees or students.i was referring to the honor roll, which is pinned on the notice board.

Other schools practise this as well, not just SCGS.i was referring to the honor roll, which is pinned on the notice board.

I also have being hearing of these stories for those famous schools.... quite worried for my DD as we are not those rich family
Well it depends. There are cliques etc but which school does not have them. However, most of the girls come from super rich families so quite \"atas\". Someone related a story that in one class all the parents had cars except one girl and she was kinda of ostracized. The teachers are not on the ball as most students take tuition for all the subjects. So no real need to put in extra effort as the tuition teachers take care of the results.
