Lucky u spot it earlier. Once a child recognize the "answer" as real answer, it will be hard for them to change. This apply to other subjects answers as well 😆

                Hi ZXmum,

I understand the point put across by your son but grammatically it’s incorrect. BTW, which level is your son in ? I’ve not come across this connector ‘not only’ for my son who is in P4.

I have problems explaining the reason to my son too…he said he got the point across and mad with his teacher for marking him wrong.

My England is no good and always google for help. Found this site that my be useful http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwesl/egw/bryson.htm

Looking at the sample given in the website, my answers for \"not only\" ...\"but\" will be :

                  1. Not only did Penny break her nose, but she also broke her arm.

                  2. Not only is the film popular in Japan, but it is also popular in Singapore.

                  In both cases, I have joined \"sentence + sentence\".
Will try to google to see if \"not only\" can be used to join \"noun + noun\" as in the given answers although they sound funny.

                  PS

Ya just googled, your kids answer for 1 is correct but not for 2 & 3.

                  1. Penny broke not only her nose but also her arm.
(the same verb \"broke\" can be shared but \"her nose\" cannot be separated so \"her\" cannot be shared.)

This is an example given by one of the websites :
Correct: They will teach not only new skills but also new knowledge.

                  2. The film is popular not only in Japan but also in Singapore.
(\"in Singapore\" cannot be separated so \"in\" cannot be shared. Very common mistake)

This another example from the site :

The delivery was made neither in the morning nor in the afternoon.

                  Hope they are of help.

Hi Janet_lee88, my kid is in P5, going P6 next year. I come across the question in the assessment book, the school did not go through the question.

Hi atutor2001, thanks for your reply. Sometimes, I am confused as there is few possible answers to a question.

I see...my son is going to P5 next year. I've been looking at several titles of 'Synthesis & Transformation' this year. Reason is some of the connectors tested in worksheets are not found in P4 assessment books...instead they are found in P5 ones.

Actually the answer for Q1 given by the book will be considered wrong as it is not in the most concise form.

I faced the same problem when my kids were in Pr. What I did then was to write down such \"cases\" in a note book and revised with my kids.

                        For example, \"her arms\" and \"her legs\", the \"her\" cannot be shared when using conjunction and \"in Singapore\" & \"in Japan\", the \"in\" also can shared.

Soon I discovered that such type of \"difficult\" questions would be coming out over and over again in the exam papers. Although we can't explain the \"grammatical\" reason behind, we will still get the sentence structure right. Unfortunately I have lost my little note book - it would be wonderful if I still have it and can it share here. Many interesting little notes like \"after if need to use were instead of was\"... Now I rely on my fading memory and luckily there is this new toy call google.
